Freshman Lauren English fired a 1-under-par 71 to lead the Pioneers in an attempt to win a third straight championship this morning when the final round gets underway.

Chicago Heights Marian is in second place (309), followed by Marion (313).

English had three birdies on the front nine and another on the back. Still, that wasn’t enough to keep pace with Lake Forest senior Hailey Koschmann, who started birdie-eagle and finished with a stunning 6-under 66.

“I thought we played pretty well on a course that we’re not real familiar with,” U High coach Cal Hubbard said. “Lauren’s 71 was outstanding, and I thought Chelsea Harris and Kaitlyn Wampler had really good rounds.”

Harris shot a 3-over 75, while Wampler was at 76. Cheryl Liang rounded out the U High scoring with an 80.

“I know that all the kids are feeling some pressure, and the coach is feeling some pressure,” Hubbard said. “We’ve got one more round, and we’re going to go out and try to play as well as we can and just see what happens.”

Harris said the course, in particular the greens, played more difficult than she expected. But Harris said the team remains confident heading into today’s final round.

“It definitely gives us more confidence going into tomorrow knowing that we’re in first,” she said. “The girls all played pretty well today. To win another state championship is our goal, and it would sum up my four years pretty well. We want it pretty bad so if we win tomorrow it will be just awesome.”

Streator’s Jackie Leonard shot a 5-over 77 and sits in a two-way tie for 18th place.

El Paso-Gridley tied for ninth

Jessica Knepp had a 91 to lead El Paso-Gridley to a two-way tie for ninth place in the Class A tourney at the par-72 Stone Creek Golf Course in Makanda.

The rest of the EP-G scorers include Sydney Conway, Ashleigh Gillespie and Katie Lutz, all of whom had a 103.

Central Catholic’s Tabby Bell shot 93 and is tied for 35th.
