1A boys state golf: Byron holds slim lead over St. Thomas More
BLOOMINGTON — The new tee that just opened this week on Prairie Vista Golf Course’s 18th hole drew high praise from Champaign St. Thomas More coach Tim Murphy. | Photo gallery “I love it. It’s much better,” he said after Friday’s first round of the Class 1A State Tournament was completed. Murphy just hopes his team plays the hole a little better today. Four St. Thomas More players made double-bogey 6 on No. 18. Byron survived a triple bogey on the hole to shoot a 311 total and take a two-stroke lead over St. Thomas More into today’s final round, which begins at 8:30 a.m. Waterloo Gibault is third at 318, followed by Raymond Lincolnwood (320) and Monmouth-Roseville (322). Peoria Christian has made noise in the past here as a team, but didn’t qualify this season. But at least one Charger is still being heard from. Peoria Christian junior Jonathan Hauter fired a 4-under-par 68 to take the individual lead, with Sterling Newman’s Matt Hageman and Monmouth-Roseville’s Ben Gillen two shots behind. This is the eighth time Byron has qualified for the state tourney in the last nine years, with a third-place finish in 2000. However, coach Mark Cameron wasn’t sure what to expect this year with the expansion to three classes. “I’m not aware of a lot of the schools. I’m used to seeing some of the other people who are in 2A,” said Cameron. “I didn’t know what to think other than seeing the sectional scores, but I thought there were five or six teams certainly capable of doing something.” The veteran Tigers, with four seniors and two juniors, were led by Jake Schertz’s 74. Marc Smith added 78, while Charlie Lukan fired 79 (despite a 7 on the 18th) and Jim Feimster shot 80. “Marc Smith had a situation in sectional with a scorecard and we had to DQ (disqualify) him,” said Cameron. “He’s certainly capable of shooting 78 and sometimes a little better. I was happy to see that with what happened at sectional. “We have to focus on what happens tomorrow and not what happened today. That will be the key.” Murphy, whose team finished sixth in last year’s Class A tournament, knows being only two strokes behind is a good position. “We’ll probably sleep better than the other team,” he said. “At least the coach will.” Ryan Murphy, the coach’s son, had five birdies and led St. Thomas More with 73, which is tied for seventh individually. Jeff Nogle is 15th with 75. “It’s definitely easier than last year,” said coach Murphy of the favorable weather conditions. “There were some tough pin placements, about five holes were tricky, but we didn’t have to play (the par-3) No. 12 with that crosswind. There were a couple doubles, but not the 10s and 12s we’ve had (from the field) in previous years.” Hauter was a freshman on Peoria Christian’s 2005 Class A state champions and tied for second individually last year. He was 1-over-par heading to No. 9 before making birdies on five of his next eight holes to zoom into the lead. Get area high school sports scores and statistics at Varsity Sports. |
