Fieldcrest South winner of national award
MINONK — Fieldcrest South Elementary School joins Fox Creek Elementary in Bloomington as one of only two downstate schools to win national honors for excellence.
Fieldcrest South will receive its honor at 9 a.m. Monday, when a U.S. Department of Education official announces the school has been named a Blue Ribbon School for meeting standards of the No Child Left Behind Act. The school is among public schools whose students, regardless of background, achieved in the top 10 percent of state tests. Only 19 Illinois schools won honors in that category.
Fox Creek, honored last week, was in a category that recognized schools with at least 40 percent of its students from disadvantaged backgrounds that dramatically improve student performance.
“The celebrating continues,” said Fox Creek Principal Mark Robinson Thursday.
Monday’s presentation will be made by Todd Zoellick at a 9 a.m. assembly.
Fieldcrest South’s test scores soar above the average school districts in Illinois. Notably, fourth-grade students reached 96 percent of “meets or exceeds state standards” in reading and 98 percent in math on the ISAT tests, said Principal Dorrie Sokn.
Principals from both schools will attend a conference and ceremony in Washington, D.C., on Nov. 12-13. Also attending will be Fox Creek’s Julia Schoonover, the principal’s backup administrator; and Fieldcrest’s Lynn Tjayden and Beth Langman.
