BLOOMINGTON -- A 33-year-old Bloomington man accused in the death of a toddler in April was in court Friday for a status hearing.
Joe Mendez is accused of murdering his girlfriend’s son, 3-year-old Logan Bratton, April 4 in an apartment he shared with the child’s mother in the 800 block of West Washington Street. Mendez faces three counts of murder and one count of aggravated battery of a child.
The next court hearing for Mendez is Nov. 16. He remains in the McLean County jail in lieu of posting $100,000.
Mendez gave police several accounts of what occurred to the child, including a fall from a bunk bed, authorities said. He eventually said he struck the boy on the head with his hand and the boy fell, authorities said.
Logan was taken to a local hospital and transferred to OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria where he died that night. The child died of multiple blunt-force injuries, according to a coroner’s report.
