Daily Digest for Oct. 13, 2007: Verizon gives books to kids BLOOMINGTON — Some 2,016 students — third-graders in Normal-based Unit 5, Bloomington District 87, Heyworth, LeRoy, Lexington, Tri-Valley, Ridgeview, Prairie Central, Olympia and Morton school districts — received dictionaries as part of Verizon’s literacy program. Spokeswoman Karen Boswell said this is the fourth year for the program. Local man picked as Michigan homecoming king NORMAL -- Phil Drazewski of Normal has been named king of the University of Michigan homecoming in Ann Arbor. A committee selected 10 male and 10 female finalists based on the candidates’ campus involvement and how they represent what it means to be a Wolverine. The student body elected the king and queen. Drazewski, a 2004 graduate of Normal Community West High School, is the son of Scott and Shirley Drazewski. Harvest festival set for Oct. 27 BLOOMINGTON — The Pantagraph’s Harvest Fest will be Oct. 27 at the Interstate Center in Bloomington. The family festival will run 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. It will feature a pumpkin patch, hayrack rides, a hay maze, face painting, music, costume contest, storytelling, arts and crafts and food from vendors such as Ropp Cheese and the Mackinaw Valley Winery. Admission will be free. SETTING IT RIGHT Local Area Calendar — Advance registration required for two-day AARP Driver Safety Class; 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Oct. 24 and 25 at Normal Community Center, 1 Normal Plaza (old ISSCS home), enter at intersection of Lincoln and Beech streets, Normal.
