Regional Report: Long-time pie auctioneer wins pie raffle
ATLANTA — Les Payne has gone from auctioning pies to eating them. The Atlanta farmer has been auctioning off baked goods for the city booster group A-Team at the Atlanta Fall Festival for eight years. The group also offers a pie-of-the-month raffle, and this year, Payne was the lucky one in the raffle. For 12 months, the winner gets a homemade, fresh-out-of-the-oven pie baked by an A-Team member and delivered monthly to his or her door. The pies have such a reputation that the previous year’s winner, Dick Fugate, came up and shook Payne’s hand in congratulations. Having just received his first month’s pie, Payne said he would agree. “Oh yes, they know how to bake a pie,” Payne said. New treasurer needed — The city of Delavan is accepting applications for a treasurer and assistant police chief. The previous treasurer, Debbie Livengood, who only accepted the position because nobody ran for it in the April 17 election, has decided to retire from the position. Also leaving the city is Assistant Police Chief John Adkins, whose resignation became effective as of Thursday. Adkins said he was resigning for personal reasons and wants to pursue other interests. New city vehicles — McLean and Mackinaw are getting new city vehicles this month. In Mackinaw, the police department purchased a 2007 Chevy Impala Police Interceptor for $19,482 through the Illinois Municipal Joint Purchasing Program. In McLean, the water and streets department is buying a 2008 Ford F250 pickup truck equipped with a snowplow for $23,475 after trade-in. |
