NORMAL — A research team at Illinois State University wants to know whether rainwater collected from campus rooftops can help save resources.

The Department of Health Sciences students are collecting water from Edwards Hall to see if it can be used in steam boilers instead of tap water. They believe rainwater could save up to $75,000 a year in energy, water and chemicals, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by almost 1 million pounds a year.

ISU has four steam boilers, but not all of them are used year-round.

Rainwater is naturally distilled and low in dissolved minerals. Steam boilers operate more efficiently when using water low in dissolved minerals.

Arts center receives grant for exhibit

CHARLESTON — A $5,000 grant from the Illinois Humanities Council means Eastern Illinois University’s Tarble Arts Center can take a spring exhibit on the road.

The center was awarded a grant for its Rural Midwestern Corridors exhibit, which opens April 19, and will explore the aesthetics of landscape along national roads, riverways and railroads, said Kit Morice, Tarble’s curator for education. The exhibit will include photographs, maps, artwork and possibly other cultural artifacts related to the Midwestern landscape.

In addition to a display at the center, the exhibit will travel to four local communities during fall 2008 and spring 2009. The center also plans to use the grant to bring a nationally known guest speaker to the center in conjunction with the exhibit, Morice said.

Eastern’s grant was one of 15 the council awarded during its fall board of directors meeting.

David Sedaris

to appear at WIU

MACOMB — National Public Radio comedian and best-selling author David Sedaris will appear at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in Western Hall at Western Illinois University as part of the Bureau of Cultural Affairs series.

Sedaris’ Macomb performance is one night before his appearance at the Bloomington Center for the Performing Arts.

He is an internationally known humorist who got his start on NPR’s Morning Edition, recounting the strange-but-true experiences of his job as a Macy’s elf. The Washington Post called him “one of America’s most prickly, and most delicious, young comic talents.”

Sedaris’ best selling books include “Barrel Fever,” “Naked,” “Holidays on Ice” and “Me Talk Pretty One Day.” He travels extensively through Europe and the United States on lecture tours.
