Advanced training facility for Guardsmen now open
By Associated Press
SPRINGFIELD — The Illinois Military Academy is now open.
There was a ribbon-cutting ceremony Saturday at the $17.7 million facility, which will provide advanced training to National Guardsmen.
The 121,000-square-foot academy replaces buildings that dated back to 1939 at Camp Lincoln in Springfield. It includes an auditorium, a library and lodgings for more than 250 personnel.
Illinois National Guard’s adjutant general, Maj. Gen. William Enyart, said the academy will help Guardsmen maintain their status as a ready and relevant force.
The state of Illinois provided more than $1 million to construct the academy. The federal government paid for most of the rest of the costs.
