LINCOLN — If you enjoy German food and music, St. John United Church of Christ is the place to be Saturday.

Bratwurst, red cabbage, German potato salad, homemade bread and apple streudel are on the menu for the church’s seventh annual Germanfest. The event will be held at the church, 204 Seventh St., from 11 to 3 p.m. A gift shop will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

About a dozen volunteers young and old gathered last week to make the 50 apple streudels needed for the event. Some peeled and sliced the hundreds of apples, which reminded some of the men of their days in military service.

Volunteers say the sweet smell of apples and cinnamon fill the church when the streudels are baked. Volunteers also gather before the event to make gallons of potato salad and cabbage.

The dishes are prepared from family recipes, although Edna Mara, who oversees the streudel preparation, admits she has changed the recipe over the years.

The annual event has drawn up to 1,000 people from around the area and even some from out of state, said organizer Wayne Mara of Lincoln. “We even had some pilots from Missouri fly in to attend the event one year,” Mara said.

Besides the food, there will be German music to enjoy. The Alley Kats band from Granite City will play a variety of music during the event, including polka. Mara says many visitors stay the entire afternoon to listen or dance.

There will be crafts for sale, including a “Greater Gifts” sale that benefits Third World countries.

The annual event was started seven years ago as a fun way to bring the congregation together. The first year was a great success, and the event has grown into a substantial fundraiser for mission projects.

The cost of the meal is $7 for adults. Children younger than six are free. Carry-outs are available.

The money raised will go to Mom and Me Camp, Back Bay Mission, Share Pregnancy and Infant Loss Support Inc., and the Church World Service Disaster Relief Fund.
