NCHS wins BHS girls tennis sectional
For the fifth consecutive season, the Normal Community girls’ tennis team captured the sectional crown, finishing with 26 points to win the Bloomington High School sectional Saturday morning. It was the fourth consecutive season the Ironmen won both the sectional and Big 12 Conference crowns. “It’s all special,” NCHS coach Jim Boswell said. “There were a lot of even teams out there. We knew it was going to be close. We just go with our confidence and hope all the works pays off. It was sweet today.” Morton finished second with 21 points, while Bloomington captured third with 16. University High (15) finished fourth, Normal West and Lincoln (8) tied for fifth and Central Catholic (6) took seventh in the 10-team sectional. Pontiac (4) finished in eight, while Streator was 10th. NCHS’ doubles team of Kristen Laird and Kendyl Fisher captured the championship after downing teammates Emily Gannon and Jessica Steach 6-1, 6-3 in the title match. U High’s tandem of Kathleen Johnson and Amanda Lawler took third place. In singles competition, BHS’ Tara Clemens fell to Morton’s Amy Unzicker 7-5, 6-4 in the championship. U High’s Sienna Reuter finished third after defeating Ava Maxwell of NCHS 6-2, 6-1. This is the second straight season that Laird and Fisher advanced to state. Last season, the two finished at 2-2. Maxwell lost her first two matches last year. Clemens advanced to state last year in doubles and went 3-2. Boswell, whose team will seek its first top-ten finish since 1990, is “real happy and real pleased” with his team and admits that “they have some confidence” heading into next weekend’s state tournament in Mount Prospect. “We kind of know who’s good and who’s beatable,” he said. “You hope you can stay with the teams you know you can beat. You take it one match, one point at a time.” Get area high school sports scores and statistics at Varsity Sports. |
