CARBONDALE -- The University High girls golf team sent their coach, Cal Hubbard, out with a championship.

Another one.

The Pioneers earned their third straight state golf title Saturday, shooting two-day total of 607 to top Marion’s 619 Saturday at Hickory Ridge Public Golf Center at the Class AA state tournament.

Hubbard has steered his last three U High girls golf teams to championships and also led the Pioneers boys bas-ketball team to the Class A title in 1995.

“These girls have worked so hard and I’m very proud of them,” Hubbard said. “A lot of times we have six scores that are good enough to use instead of just four.”

Marion, which was in third place entering the final round, shot 306 Saturday to U High’s 305.

The Pioneers were led by a girl who entered high school just two months ago. Freshman Lauren English shot a 1-over 73 and finished with a 144 to take second place among individuals.

“It’s really an honor to be a part of this team,” English said. “I knew we were good even though we lost a couple people from last year, but it’s just exciting to be on a state championship team.”

English had a four-birdie round, including three on the front nine, after a 1-under 71 on Friday.

“I’m really proud of myself right now,” she said. “Usually it’s a struggle to keep my position after the first day, but I was able to keep it together. “My goal for next year is to win it as an individual. I might have to make it as an individual.”

U High seniors Chelsea Harris and Cheryl Liang finished tied for 20th. Harris had a 75 Saturday for a two-day total of 154, while Liang trimmed six shots from her first-round score for an 80-74--154. Kaitlyn Wampler (76-79--155) tied for 23rd.

Lake Forest’s Hailey Koschmann delivered an outstanding performance to snag the top individual honor at the meet. The senior, who signed to play golf for the University of Illinois next year, shot a 3-under-par 69 Saturday for a two-day total of 135. Her total was nine strokes better than her closest competitor.

“I really wanted to win this year because last year I lost by one stroke,” Koschmann said. “I’m really excited to finally win. It really put more pressure on me this year. I never even really dreamt of breaking 70 twice at state.”

El Paso-Gridley finishes 9th

Led by freshman Jessica Knepp, El Paso-Gridley finished ninth in the Class A meet at the par-72 Stone Creek Golf Course in Makanda.

Helped by two birdies on the back nine, Knepp finished 23rd with an 86 for a two-day total of 177. Sydney Conway (103-98--201), Katie Lutz (103-114--217) and Ashleigh Gillespie (103-117--220) rounded out the scoring for the Titans.

" Coach Hubbard and the 2007 girls state golf champs...CONGRATULATIONS!!! What an amazing experience it must be to be part of such a talented team and to earn your 3rd state title! The best of luck to the seniors as they depart. Coach, it is only fitting that you should end your career as Uhigh's girls golf coach on such high note! You were and obviously still are an outstanding coach. The Uhigh girls golf program has come a long way because of your first-rate coaching style. Thank you for all of the years of dedication and support! "
