Intercity goes 1-2-3 in Big 12 cross country meet

DECATUR — For the first time in Big 12 Conference history, Intercity cross country teams swept the top three spots in both the boys and girls divisions Saturday at Decatur’s Hickory Point Golf Course.
The Normal Community girls won their seventh consecutive league championship, scoring 48 points to 60 for Normal West and 75 for Bloomington.
The Normal West boys scored 35 points to win for the first time since 1999 and the third time in school history. Two-time defending champion BHS grabbed second (64) followed by NCHS (93).
Ashley Verplank of BHS won her third straight Big 12 individual title, touring the 3-mile course in 17 minutes, 34 seconds to finish 58 seconds ahead of runner-up Marie O’Leary of NCHS.
Other scorers for the Ironmen were Camille Dobbins (7th, 19:14), Mara Weaver (12th, 19:23), Sarah Roberts (15th, 19:34) and Raquel Gibson (16th, 19:38). Finishing in the top 10 for Normal West were Kristen Hallatt (3rd, 19:00) and Kayla Braffet (8th, 19:15).
In the boys race, freshman Drew Kerschieter led Normal West in second (15:33) while Jonny Kaufmann ran third (15:41). Other Wildcat scorers were Wade Rupard (6th, 15:57), Austin Baer (8th, 16:00) and Steve Ross (16th, 16:35).
Champaign Centennial’s Eric Simpson won in 15:28. In the top 10 for BHS were Doug Rever (4th, 15:49), Josh Roig (7th, 15:58) and Andy Szabo (9th, 16:01). Logan Campbell paced NCHS in 11th (16:14).
