Parkside, Pederson defend cross country titles in IESA

NORMAL — The Parkside Junior High boys cross country team and Chiddix seventh grader Carly Pederson defended their Illinois Elementary School Association Class AA state titles and the Tremont boys captured the Class A crown Saturday at Maxwell Park.
Pederson sped over the 3,200-meter course in 11 minutes, 20 seconds, breaking her own course record by two seconds and topping her winning time from 2006 by 24 seconds.
Pederson finished 19 seconds ahead of the runner-up to remain on pace to become the first three-time state champion next year. She is the third person in Class AA and the seventh girl to win back-to-back titles in the 28-year history of the meet.
The Parkside boys scored 37 points to best runner-up Buffalo Grove Cooper by 43. The Pythons’ finishers were Logan Degroot (7th, 10:48), Logan Abeling (8th, 10:53), Peyton Scheuermann (13th, 10:57), Caleb Wiebenga (14th, 10:58), Taylor Hallatt (15th, 10:59), Eric Gordon (17th, 11:01) and River Gordon (48th, 11:30).
Parkside’s squad includes five members of last year’s team including Abeling, Eric Gordon, Degroot, Wiebenga and Scheuermann.
In the Class A boys race, Tremont scored 137 while runner-up Olympia tallied 199.
Tremont finishers were Cole Dill (7th, 11:20), Sam Stuber (24th, 11:37), Taylor Schweigert (47th, 11:58), Connor Ehnle (60th, 12:04), Caleb Imig (85th, 12:17), Caleb Pflederer (92nd, 12:21) and Bryan Green (173rd, 13:20).
In the Class A girls division, Julie James of El Paso-Gridley led area finishers in third (12:06).
