Hockey night in Bloomington for ladies only

BLOOMINGTON — It is ladies’ night, with a twist. The Bloomington Prairie Thunder is offering Hockey 101 — a seminar of sorts for the sport for ladies only — at U.S. Cellular Coliseum at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 24.

The event is an opportunity for women to learn about hockey and meet the PrairieThunder players ahead of the International Hockey League season, which starts Saturday with a road game at Flint before the home opener Oct. 26 against Fort Wayne.

Denise Grazar, salon manager at Fox and Hounds Day Spa, already has started planning for Hockey 101.

“I’ve actually started rounding up my girlfriends and some friends from high school; there will be a lot of us there,” Grazar said. “When I invited (them) I said, ‘Well, sorry, tell your husband he can’t come; it’s girls night out.’ ”

The night will start with a cocktail hour, allowing for the women to chat and take pictures with the Thunder players as well as have their hockey questions answered. For casual fans such as Mary Schad, the event provides an opportunity to familiarize herself with a game she would like to know more about.

“I’m not a major hockey fan. I do go to a couple games a year,” she said. “I want to understand the game a little bit better and have more of an awareness of the game.”

The PrairieThunder players will be there to speak and answer questions as well as hit the ice to perform live demonstrations on hockey strategy, skills and the necessary equipment to play hockey.

For Grazar, Hockey 101 will be more about catching up with friends than learning the intricacies of hockey.

“I know there will be different games and different activities, but I’m looking forward to getting together with some friends from high school,” Grazar said. “It’ll be like a mini high school reunion.”

For the women attending, as well as the players, Hockey 101 could be a night of education and entertainment.

“I just enjoy sports, and have never understood hockey,” Schad said. “I think this will be fun.”

Through Thursday, tickets are two for $30 or one for $15. After Thursday, prices are $30 in advance or $35 at the door. Hors d’oeuvres and two beverages are included in the ticket price. They can be purchased at the U.S. Coliseum box office or online at www.pantagraph.com/hockey101.

" Why not a course on arena management open to the public. The staff could answer questions at last on what actually can be done to svae this sinking ship. Stop pointing to the city to make the place work. "
