Former firefighter now kindled as treasurer of Mackinaw

MACKINAW — Mackinaw’s new treasurer knows how to put out fires. Literally.

Scott Eidenmiller of Stanford was a firefighter for 27 years, and has been a trustee of the Allin Township Fire Protection District for 10 years. He knows about wanting money, and about needing to be conservative with a budget.

“I’ve been on both sides of the issue,” he said.

In his time as a trustee (he left the fire department because of a conflict of interest), Eidenmiller has been instrumental in investments. “I have seen the benefits of how investing works,” he says.

In 1992, the Allin Township Fire District purchased a new ambulance for cash. In 1999, the district sold its old ambulance and bought another for cash. They now want to buy a third ambulance, again with no borrowed funds. No loans have been necessary due to the short and long term certificates of deposit that Eidenmiller helped them set up.

“I hope to do the same with Mackinaw,” he said. “One of my goals is to invest for them.”

Eidenmiller is thinking long term. In 2004, Mackinaw completed a $3.4 million project to upgrade its water plant. Eidenmiller’s plan is for Mackinaw to have the “financial resources” to fix its water plant 20 years down the road without having to borrow money.

He’s already sat down with a bank manager and gone through each of the village’s accounts to determine the best interest rates. At the last board meeting, Eidenmiller recommended and the board agreed to switch the general, water and sewer, and economic development funds to accounts that receive higher interest.

Working with figures and the people behind them is his strength and passion.

“It’s something I’ve always enjoyed, and it’s helping a community,” he said. “I plan on being with (Mackinaw) as long as they will keep me.”
