GIRARD — Illinois State Police say a 19-year-old Central Illinois man has died after his sport utility vehicle was struck by an Amtrak passenger train.

Matthew Munchalfen of Girard died from his injuries Saturday at Carlinville Area Hospital. He didn’t have any passengers.

State police say Munchalfen failed to yield to the train Saturday before he was hit at a Macoupin County railroad crossing.

Police say the train pushed his Ford Explorer more than 2,100 feet on the tracks before stopping.
