Parenting Expo to provide insight for moms and dads
NORMAL — There are days when most parents would like a coach to point out some of the finer points in the “game” of life to help them parent like a pro. Parents will have that opportunity on Saturday when keynote speaker Dina Emser, a parent coach, will give some free parenting advice at Parent Expo 2007. The event is from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Prairieland Elementary School. Emser’s theory is that professionals use their strengths and they know how to network with others who can help them be successful. Workshops will be held on a variety of topics. “It’s a one-stop place to get the information,” said Mendy Smith, the event’s chairwoman. The expo, in its ninth year, is sponsored by local groups that assist parents. Topics include communication between schools and parents, knowing if your child is ready to start school, dental habits, dyslexia and reading problems, love and logic, and positive parenting, said organizer Susan Williams. “We see so much interest in parents in these topics,” Smith said. Home visits, surveys from previous years’ attendees, and ideas from schools and service providers help organizers every year. Presenters include teachers, counselors, and others working with autism and dyslexia. There are also tips for parents with children in special education about how to get the most out of individual education plan. Childcare is available for children 3 and older. Up to 40 children will be able to take part in activities and games organized for them, Smith said. A vendor area will offer information about services and goods, Smith said.
