Bloomington man pleads guilty to beating 4-year-old
BLOOMINGTON — A Bloomington man pleaded guilty Monday to beating a 4-year-old boy in June.
Andre Hooks, 35, was charged with aggravated battery of a child and unlawful restraint.
Hooks’ wife, Valerie Hawkins, 42, was charged with aggravated battery of a child and unlawful restraint after another child in the same home was taken to a hospital emergency room with serious injuries. The couple lived with other family members on the 200 block of Reeveston Drive.
In a plea agreement finalized in McLean County Circuit Court on Monday, Hooks was sentenced to two years in prison for aggravated battery. Prosecutors agreed to drop three charges of assaulting and restraining the child and threatening the mother of the children with a machete in exchange for Hooks’ guilty plea on a new aggravated battery count filed Monday.
Hooks was given credit for 108 days served in jail.
According to a statement read by Assistant State’s Attorney Michelle Brooks, police saw significant bruising on the child beaten by Hooks.
Hawkins, 42, still faces charges in connection with the younger child. Injuries to that child included clumps of hair missing and marks indicating that the child had been recently bound on his wrists and neck. An Oct. 26 status hearing is scheduled in her case.
