New Lostant mayor's roots run deep
LOSTANT — The new leader of village government in this tiny village of about 500 people has deep roots here.
Fred Hartenbower’s family connection to this LaSalle County village goes back to his great-grandfather. “It’s a tight-knit community and a nice place to raise your family,” said Hartenbower, who took over last month after long-time Mayor Jim Cooper died unexpectedly. Lostant “is one of the best places in the country to live,” he said.
The owner of Jim’s Service Station had been mayor for 20 years and the village board voted unanimously to name Hartenbower, 53, as Cooper’s replacement. He will serve until the spring 2009 election and brings about a dozen year’s board experience to his new job.
Hartenbower says Cooper can’t be replaced, and credited his predecessor with pushing for sanitary sewers.
“Jim was a good mayor and a super guy,” Hartenbower said.
For Hartenbower, challenges include maintaining that sanitary sewer system and a water tower.
He doesn’t know whether he’ll seek a full term as mayor, but he has some hopes for Lostant, including a gas station and grocery store.
Rick Micklos, who once served on the village board with both Cooper and Hartenbower, agreed more business would be good and would bring tax revenue to “allow improvements to the town.”
