Cops: Man beaten, robbed near IWU library

BLOOMINGTON -- Two teenage boys beat and robbed a 19-year-old man early Saturday on the campus of Illinois Wesleyan University, police said, who also responded to a report of a fight and gunshot near the university.

The robbery victim was taken to BroMenn Regional Medical Center, Normal. The attack occurred about 2 a.m., said Bloomington Police spokesman David White.

White said the man apparently was walking north on or near a road just west of the university’s library when he heard two male voices behind him, White said. The man turned and was struck on the head, possibly with a wrench or metal pipe, and fell to the ground, White said.

The victim said the two boys hit him, told him to empty his pockets and then ran toward Shirk Center with his wallet, keys and cellular phone, White said. IWU security officers found the objects later.

The victim was sitting on a bench and bleeding from the head when police and rescue workers found him in the 100 block of East University Street, White said.

About 20 minutes later, police from Bloomington, Normal and the McLean County Sheriff’s Office were called to a large fight at Shirk Center, where there had been a party, White said. Officers also received a call someone had fired a gun, but police found no fight when they arrived.

By the time officers arrived, White said, “Everybody just left.”

" It surprises me how safe people feel on our campus. I would not feel safe enough anywhere to walk by myself at 1am, but it's amazing how many males and females do this every night on campus. And on weekends, so many people do this while intoxicated or at even later times. IWU needs to stop making it seem like our campus is invincible so that we're not suddenly reminded of this fact when something like this happens. Also, a party at Shirk? What? "

" I'm not Aaron, but I may have an answer. There are no "housing projects" in the area, but there are houses converted into apartments which some tenants are renting under section 8 subsidy. People in public housing, which is a little different than section 8, will live in "project"-type buildings. However, section 8 can be utilized anywhere a landlord is willing to accept it. Most are happy to, because they know they will be getting paid at least some rent owed every month. Most people on section 8 are NOT getting a "free ride", as rent is based on their income, and a percentage is figured to determine how much rent that person can afford to pay. Then section 8 pays the difference. Say you are a single mother, and your rent is $550, but you only make $8.00 an hour and have child care to pay so that you can go to work.(sometimes they consider childcare expenses when figuring out what you'll end up paying for rent out of pocket) In the end, this person may pay only $250 a month for rent, section 8 pays the difference to the landlord. "

" Student is right. You are not immune to crime on Wesleyan campus. I used to go there, and it may seem as if you're in a bubble (that's what your administration tells parents anyway), but E Empire, Walnut, McLean, Mulberry, and E Locust streets have some very delapitated housing with thugs to match. Wesleyan is in the midlle of a pretty dangerous neighborhood. I'm worried that your "it can't happen here" attitude may get you hurt. Also, Heather Lockmiller was murdered while she was a student at your school, but maybe current students don't know about crime that's happened that far in the past. "

" When they were over him forcing him to empty his pockets, he could've pulled out some cash, held it up with one hand to get their attention, then use the other to spray those idiots in the face. Then the tables are turned. In the end, though, this man did the right thing - give the morons what they want and hope they leave you alone. No money/cell phone/wallet is worth your life. I recommend anyone in a similar situation to try not to escalate the situation by being a hero. If that's not your style, and you want to get some of your own justice, smack these guys around a bit for me. My friend got mugged at gunpoint at Locust and McLean a little while back...this junk needs to stop. "

" It is legal in Illinois to carry an unloaded semi-automatic gun in a fanny pack with the clip in your pocket. The problem with this is it takes several seconds to access and load your weapon. If the people shot were punks as this I imagine the cops would ignore their assertion that the gun was already loaded. That is if they were around to tell their side of the story. Why not have concealed carry so idiots like this have something to worry about. In the meantime a gun in a fanny pack is the 2nd best solution. "

The security there is a joke, I have called the number and gotten voicemail. They are telling people to call security if they feel unsafe? CALL 911! WAKE UP! "

why are there no descriptions of the perps? wrote on Oct 16, 2007 6:13 AM:

" Once again the Pantagraph is ignoring the publics demand for details in crimes. I doubt if this post gets passed the censors because the Pantagraph constantly refuses to give descriptions of criminals. What is the paper afraid of by not giving the reader the full story? Even in crimestoppers reviews if there is not a photo available a physcal description is not given by the newspaper. Forget about political correctness for once people and give the citizens and subscribers something to work with to either bring a witness to light or to just give a little heads up to the next potential victim. I challange you to print this for all to see and comment on. "

I guess since they had a reason to be there we should place blame on the victim. I mean if he hadn't been there this wouldn't have happened. I guess he got what he deserved with the broken bones and bruises for not having more money for them to take. "
