Cops: Man beaten, robbed near IWU library
BLOOMINGTON -- Two teenage boys beat and robbed a 19-year-old man early Saturday on the campus of Illinois Wesleyan University, police said, who also responded to a report of a fight and gunshot near the university.
The robbery victim was taken to BroMenn Regional Medical Center, Normal. The attack occurred about 2 a.m., said Bloomington Police spokesman David White.
White said the man apparently was walking north on or near a road just west of the university’s library when he heard two male voices behind him, White said. The man turned and was struck on the head, possibly with a wrench or metal pipe, and fell to the ground, White said.
The victim said the two boys hit him, told him to empty his pockets and then ran toward Shirk Center with his wallet, keys and cellular phone, White said. IWU security officers found the objects later.
The victim was sitting on a bench and bleeding from the head when police and rescue workers found him in the 100 block of East University Street, White said.
About 20 minutes later, police from Bloomington, Normal and the McLean County Sheriff’s Office were called to a large fight at Shirk Center, where there had been a party, White said. Officers also received a call someone had fired a gun, but police found no fight when they arrived.
By the time officers arrived, White said, “Everybody just left.”
