Fieldcrest South celebrates national honor
MINONK -- Fieldcrest South Elementary got a blue ribbon Monday for its students meeting or exceeding national education standards. South was one of only two downstate schools — and the only rural school — to receive national honors related to the No Child Left Behind Act. The other downstate school is Fox Creek Elementary in Bloomington, which was recognized two weeks ago. South celebrated its win with an assembly Monday. Todd Zoellick, a regional representative from the U.S. Department of Education, presented the students and staff with a certificate recognizing its designation. Superintendent Randy Vincent, school board President Joe Kirkpatrick and board members Tom Barth and Tim McNamara also attended. "Students, teachers will tell you that really great things happen when you work hard," said Vincent. "This is a really great thing. We appreciate your hard work." South Principal Dorrie Sokn said she was honored to be principal at the school. "I couldn't be more proud," she said. "I've inherited such a wonderful community of students and staff. "Even if we didn't get this award, we're still a blue-ribbon class," she said. Zoellick explained the significance of the award. "You are part of a very small and very special group of schools," he said. "Think about the whole state of Illinois from one end to the other. It's a big state. Out of hundreds of schools, you are one of 19 schools to get a blue ribbon." Zoellick said only 287 U.S. schools won the blue ribbon designation. "I want you to know how important this is," he said, "and how proud we are of each and every one of you for all of your hard work and effort ... for being such great students." Ninety-six percent of South's fourth-graders met or exceeded state standards in reading, and 98 percent in math. The school ranked is in the top 10 percent of state tests. Sokn and several teachers will travel to Washington, D.C., for a conference and ceremony on Nov. 12-13 to receive a plaque.
