Lincoln group to send book to soldiers, vets
LINCOLN -- A group from Lincoln is working to brighten the holidays for soldiers and veterans. Main Street Lincoln plans to send the book, “A Soldier’s Night before Christmas,” to Logan County soldiers serving overseas and to veterans. The book is written by Christine Ford and Trish Holland and takes place on a U.S. Army base in the desert. Event chairwoman Tecia Hennessey would like to send the book to every soldier from Logan County. “We currently have about 50 orders for books, and we are hoping for a lot more,” said Hennessey. She said the community can help by sending her the names and addresses of those currently serving overseas. Her focus is on Logan County, but she is happy to send the book to any soldier or veteran. The cost of each book is $15, which includes packing and postage. Hennessey plans to send the book to every address she gets, regardless of whether it is accompanied by a donation. The deadline is Nov. 1. Make checks payable to: Main Street Lincoln Veterans Book. Send soldiers’ addresses and all donations to Tecia Hennessey, 616 N. Jefferson St., Lincoln, IL 62656. Hennessey hopes to receive enough donations to also purchase a book for each of the 44 veterans in Logan County nursing homes. Any leftover funds will be used for a future Desert Storm/Iraq memorial. Landfill question — Members of a newly formed DeWitt County watchdog group concerned with the storage of chemical wastes at the Clinton Landfill are asking local townships to place a nonbinding referendum on the February ballot asking voters for their opinion. Last week, Creek Township voted in favor of placing the referendum on the ballot. Matt Varble, president of WATCH (We’re Against Toxic CHemicals) plans to ask all 13 townships to participate. Varble and DeWitt County officials have been at odds over a recent vote of support by the county board to support the landfill’s petition for the storage of chemicals. Earlier this month, a crowd of more than 50 people appeared before the county’s land use committee to protest the decision. Varble’s group has asked the county board to reconsider and rescind its support.
