State gives grants to local libraries

SPRINGFIELD — Illinois has awarded $3.9 million in grants to 241 Illinois libraries.

Recipients of Libraries: Innovate, Create, Collaborate grants were Dwight Common School Library, $15,000; Illinois State University, Normal, $58,675; Odell Public Library District, $25,000; and Washington District Library, $68,200.

Recipients of The Emerging Grant Writer were Illinois Wesleyan University, Bloomington, $3,000; Danvers Township Library, $3,900; Eureka Public Library District, $4,900; Gilman-Danforth District Library, $4,900; Lexington Public Library District, $1,500; University High School, Normal, $4,900; Washington Community High School District 308, $4,850.

Recipients of The Safety Grant were Deer Creek District Library, $4,000; and Odell Public Library District, $4,000.

Loves Park teacher wins top state honor

DECATUR — Art teacher Ruth Meissen of Loves Park was named Illinois Teacher of the Year Saturday in Decatur.

Pontiac Township High School science teacher Paul Ritter was one of the eight finalists for the title. The remaining six hailed from Peoria, Naperville, New Douglas, Hanover Park, Lincolnshire and Freeburg and were chosen from nearly 170 nominations.

The 2006-2007 Illinois Teacher of the Year was Joe Fatheree, a technology instructor at Effingham High School.

Homes of Hope plans annual holiday tour

BLOOMINGTON — Homes of Hope Inc. is sponsoring its Holiday Tour of Homes on Nov. 30, Dec. 1 and 2. The homes will be open for tours from 1 to 8 p.m. Friday; 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday; and 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday.

The homes are 211 S. Vale St., Bloomington; 3302 Eagle Crest Road, Bloomington; and 1201 Park St., Illinois Wesleyan University, Bloomington. On Sunday only, the tour will feature The Davis Rose Inn Bed and Breakfast, 1001 E. Jefferson St.

Tickets are $20 and can be purchased starting Nov. 1 at Country Gingham, Casey’s Garden Shop, The Mole Hole, and The Coffee Hound, all in Bloomington; and The Garlic Press, Normal. Tickets may be purchased at any of the tour homes during tour hours or by calling (309) 828-4749.

History museum names education director

BLOOMINGTON — Candace Summers has named director of education at the McLean County Museum of History.

Summers previously served as public programs intern, Sunday coordinator and assistant educator, and most recently the education program coordinator.

Annual ISU 'Band Day' planned for Saturday

NORMAL — Forty-one high school marching bands will compete beginning at 7 a.m. Saturday in “Band Day,” the annual Illinois Invitational High School Marching Band Championship at Illinois State University’s Hancock Stadium.

The first band will be Olympia High School. Following the final band in the preliminary competition, ISU’s Big Red Marching Machine will perform at 6:12 p.m. The finals competition begins with trophy presentation, the top 10 scoring bands and all class winners, beginning at 7:30 p.m.

Admission is $15. Attending only daytime or evening events is $10. Senior citizens can attend for $10 for the day or $5 for daytime or evening session only. Children 12 and younger are admitted free. Tickets are available at the Hancock Stadium gates. Seating is general admission.

Streator man gets prison for robbery

CHICAGO — A Streator man who pleaded guilty to robbing Onized Credit Union April 24 has been sentenced in a Chicago federal court to three years in prison.

Frank Carter, 39, wrote a seven-page letter outlining his dysfunctional family and what led up to his robbing the credit union to support a cocaine habit.

In addition to the sentence, he will have to pay more than $1,000 restitution and serve three years’ probation after his release from prison.

Carter handed a teller a note demanding money, though no weapon was displayed. After he received $885, he told the clerk that was enough and left to pay a drug debt, he said in his letter at sentencing.
