Heyworth asphalt plant denied

BLOOMINGTON — Entler Excavating’s request to rezone 10 acres southeast of Heyworth for an asphalt plant is officially dead.

Without comment, the McLean County Board denied the request Tuesday. The item was on the board’s consent agenda and was not removed.

The McLean County Zoning Board of Appeals originally recommended rezoning the property from agriculture to manufacturing to allow the plant, but reversed its decision in a second hearing last month after hearing from Heyworth school officials, the Heyworth mayor and several citizens who opposed the change.

Safety was cited as the number one concern since the asphalt trucks would have used U.S. 136, which runs in front of the junior and senior high schools. Heyworth school Superintendent Randy Merker said as many as 98 percent of the district’s junior and senior high school students cross the highway each day to get to and from schools.

" Excellent! This ruling won''t have any bearing on my plans for a mega-skunk breeding operation on US 51 just southwest of Heyworth. My trucks will haul the animals only west on US 136 toward Pekin, the opposite direction from the schools. "

" Thank you MCLEAN county board ! Yes we left Blmtn/Nrml for a reason. We love our little village & will gladly pay the fair property taxes to support our school. At least it not going to the Judy Dome ! This is a great community and our kids have plenty to do. Plus they can always go to Bloomington and still be home before it gets dark. Please keep your crime up north. "

" Huge mistake. This should have been approved. It's simple, look left, look right, look left and cross the road (in the crosswalk) when it's safe. That is asking alot of today's time out generation. This would be more of a challenge than the PS2 or whatever is the new rage. "

" how could you be so silly thinking "millions" would be brought to the community? 99.9% of the asphalt business is for public bodies and wont bring in ANY $ to our town. Get a life! "

" Heyworth will have some growing pains in the next few years as it grows - old population vs. white collar growth. I'd hate to be a politician there, with half the town against the other, but in the end, the people paying more property taxes decided to move there for a reason: They want a clean, semi-rural suburb where they aren't right next to anything, but aren't too far from everything. They won't want to be bothered with anything production or manufacturing based for a long time, and the older population will slowly phase out or move away to seek opportunities that way. The next REAL problem they face will be: What do the kids do for fun? They'll be bored pretty soon, and look for something to do... "

" Great, now the people from Heyworth can quit complaining about their property taxes. They have an opportunity on a few occasions to receive a little business help and they decline. This would be a great opportunity for those kids at the high school. A guaranteed job after leaving that place they call a school! "

" Right kind? Beggars cant be chosers and if not for scared people wanting the get their kids into school districts with few minority students you people would not have any sub divisions. Erego you small town people are opposed to growth plain and simple. I hope this company builds a plant in Wapella and then Wapella will get the millions this plant would bring to the community. "

" The township has plenty of money to spend, just use the right of information act and look at the budget. They have plenty in the bank. "

" what would be worse, a asphault plant or a gas depot? the asphault plant is most likely not going to explode. the gas depot could put one heck of a hole in the ground and shake houses for miles. "

" Because Entler wouldn't pony up the money to upgrade the road. They could have had their plant at that location if they would have been willing to do that. Unfortunately, the township would not be able to afford to do the upgrade, and the county certainly wouldn't do it. Since the location is outside Heyworth, the village would not have been able to do it either. So it all falls right back on Entler's lap. See ya! "

" Great, now it is headed to DeWitt County, south of Clinton on 51, north of the Trinity Plant. Two big thumbs up for Heyworth for not wanting this, who does? Clinton will take anything....welcome home asphalt plant. "

" rerouting the traffic through Heyworth last summer was for a good reason. the asphalt plant just wasn't necessary. yes the high school kids are a lot more alert than the grade school kids, but it would still be dangerous. especially during events at the high school when it is so busy. try living in a small town with an asphalt plant. let's put it this way. not in our town!! "

" An asphalt plant was a wonderful idea, just a terrible location. Building it on the west side of I-51 would have been fine with most residents. This is the second proposal for something to be built on the east side of town that has been shot down because of concerns of traffic, noise, etc. Perhaps a new road that would not force semis through town would eliminate this debate? "

Heyworth Resident wrote on Oct 16, 2007 12:14 PM:

" THANK YOU McLean County Board!!!!! Thank you for putting the concerns of Heyworth and nearby residents first. And, to all of you who say we are against growth and progress here in our Village: NO, WE ARE NOT. We are for the right kind of growth. For instance, the boat shop that opened on 136, just to the West of 51 is an excellent fit. We look forward to expanding our commercial base; but in ways that do not have a negative impact on a large number of residents. I would be all for an asphalt plant ... but not at the proposed site. How about putting it West of town, near the existing gravel pit? "

" It is so much easier to be against something than for it. I have an idea, lets ban all asphalt plants and go back to gravel roads, but wait didn't I remember someone objecting to a new gravel pit. What is left, guess mud roads will have to do. Now is everybody happy? "

Big B wrote on Oct 16, 2007 11:51 AM:

? wrote on Oct 16, 2007 11:51 AM:

" with all these smart people crying about this plant, why did not someone bring up the ability to upgrade the east / west rd fom the property to US51 so these truck would not have to go past the schools. this would also taken the traffic from the oil depot away from US 136 also. the future tax money would have payed for thr road and the plant could have brought some employment to heyworth. some people are just over educated and never thing ahead. "

Just A Guy wrote on Oct 16, 2007 11:47 AM:

" High school students should know how to look both ways before crossing a street. The point about the students should be a moot point. Why wasn't there a big uproar about I74 being rerouted through town, right past the high school? Didn't that bring more traffic, including semi trucks? "
