5 years ago (2002): Eureka High School’s boys cross country team won the 31st annual Columbus Day Invitational at Amboy for a record sixth time. Leading Eureka with a 3-4-5 sweep were sophomores Sean Houseworth, Alex Gerber and Johnny Reel.
15 years ago (1992): Bobby Winkles, a 1952 graduate of Illinois Wesleyan who is a radio broadcaster for the Montreal Expos, is back in Bloomington for Wesleyan’s homecoming activities. He coached three national championship teams at Arizona State, managed the California Angels and coached with several other major league teams.
25 years ago (1982): Illinois State opens basketball practice today with coach Bob Donewald greeting 10 players returning from a 17-12 squad, including six who started at least 12 games. Leading the list of returnees are senior three-year lettermen Rick Lamb, Dwayne Tyus and Raynard Malaine.
50 years ago (1957): This is homecoming week at Illinois State and since it is the centennial year of the university, the folks in Normal naturally expect a great outpouring of the old grads for the football game between the Redbirds and Southern Illinois.
