5 years ago (2002): University High, led by medalist Brad Molitor, won the Central Catholic Class A Sectional to earn its 20th straight state golf appearance. Bloomington gained a Class AA state berth by finishing second in the Pekin Sectional. Maroa-Forsyth, U High and Normal Community were 1-2-3 in the Springfield Girls Sectional.
15 years ago (1992): John DeCicco’s first career field goal attempt made El Paso a 3-0 winner over Fieldcrest. The 5-foot-5, 155-pound junior—in his first year of football—was a soccer player at University High two years ago before transferring to El Paso.
25 years ago (1982): Normal Community spotted Springfield Lanphier a 19-0 first-quarter lead and then rallied for a 28-25 Capitol Conference football victory. NCHS scored the winning touchdown with 1:12 left in the third quarter on a 16-yard run by Rob Mitchell.
50 years ago (1957): Former Bloomington Bloomers second sacker George Cutshaw, who hit the famous ground-ball homer in the 1916 World Series at Ebbets Field in Brooklyn, is visiting relatives here and in Saunemin. He is a prosperous businessman in Brawley, Calif.
