LeROY — Josh Walker was unable to participate in the sports he loved, but he was always there to cheer on his classmates and his sisters in their endeavors.

Josh had been an inspiration to his friends and classmates as he willingly took on the obstacles of muscular dystrophy.

The LeRoy High School sophomore lost his battle with MD last week and now LeRoy students and teachers are taking great pains to honor his memory.

The elementary school staff is sponsoring a brick in his name for the LeRoy Education Advancement Foundation wall outside the elementary school.

Josh’s sophomore class created blue and red ribbons in his memory. The junior/senior high students gave cards and written memories to his family at an assembly Friday, followed by a moment of silence and a balloon release.

His football jersey was retired during a moment of silence before Friday night’s football game.

At the high school there will be an honorary page in his memory in the high school yearbook.

His parents have asked any memorial funds to be given to the Peoria District of Muscular Dystrophy or the LeRoy Ambulance Service.

Moment of silence — The Downs-based Tri-Valley school board discussed on Monday the new law mandating a moment of silence for school each day.

Superintendent Brad Cox said that one minute each school day would add up to three hours of instruction lost each year.

“I don’t see any educational value in this,” Cox told the board.

Board member Jay Chrisman said he thought the moment of silence was a good idea and supports giving students a moment to pray silently.

Pedestrian bridge closed — Heyworth officials have closed a pedestrian bridge that spans a creek on North Joselyn Street after a structural analysis revealed wood supports are rotting away and the bridge is in danger of collapse.
