UPDATED 10: p.m. BLOOMINGTON -- Two teenage boys were treated for minor injuries following a single-car rollover crash late Wednesday afternoon west of Bloomington.

A white four-door coupe ended up in a plowed field along McLean County 1200 North Road, also known as Six Points Road, about one-eighth of a mile west of McLean County 1000 East Road. Sheriff’s deputies and fire officials briefly blocked traffic in both directions.

The driver, Gage Pichon, 16, of the 1500 block of Julie Drive, Bloomington, was heading west when he swerved to miss a dead animal in the road, lost control of the car and collided with a telephone pole about 3 p.m., said McLean County Detective Joe Zoeller. It wasn’t immediately known how many times the car rolled, he said.

The car’s driver was walking near the car and his passenger appeared to be talking. Both were placed on stretchers and loaded into ambulances.

The telephone pole was knocked down and Corn Belt Energy Corp. workers were on the scene. None of the lines were touching the ground, but one was pinned near the ground by the downed pole and its cross arm.

Both Pichon and a passenger, Dillon Overman, of the same address, were treated at OSF Saint Joseph Medical Center and released, a nursing supervisor said Wednesday night.

Two of the car’s wheels were broken loose from the vehicle, and one was about 70 yards away from the car.

" I just read all the comments...gee...it was MY car they were in and if you want to see what it looks like go to Browns Wrecker. I thank God they are ok. Many teens loose their lives in accidents. Gage has only been driving 2 months..no matter what your age if your inexperienced anything can happen. As to the speed they were going only they know that. His back tire caught in gravel causing him to loose control. It's all water under the bridge. They are very fortunate God (or for those who don't believe) or someone was watching over them. "

" and isn't it irresponsible not unresponsible and maybe they should also reexamine when to use upper case and lower case. I once swerved to miss an animal on that road but it was a dead deer and I was driving a volkswagen, but I know how it can just come up on you! I am glad they are ok and people need to start worrying about themselves and not everyone else! "

Look at Tazewell country. They had to create a speical committee to address these these types of issues. TAKE NOTE AND SLOW DOWN. Third thing, The animal is DEAD let's see, Chance hitting another car, or the situation that resulted, OR JUST HIT THE DAMN THING......IT'S DEAD!!!! "

" They don't need to lower the speed limit in this area because of all the new houses and new families living out there, they need to stop building new houses in what used to be farm fields. Stop the urban sprawl. If you want to live in town, stay in bloomington/ normal and quit building all the new subdivisions in the country. Also quit judging this boy by the actions of others. Maybe he was going to fast, but you don't know that. Leave him a lone and be happy that him and his friend walked away safely. I for one am glad they are OK. "

" i was driving and got a $75 ticket for failur to slow for an accident.I think the ticket is fair somewhat. I didnt see the animal untill we came right over the hill. I probable could have slowed down and probable should have but what it failed to say was i also swerved back to miss an oncoming car. Me and my friand are ok and we had some minor cuts and thats all. "

JTE wrote on Oct 18, 2007 10:01 AM:

" This is about a mile east of the Covell Road, not by Nord Fields.. It's a pretty straight and rolling so, the speed limit is 55 (unmarked rural areas are all 55). Seems to me for them to have broken the wheels off (it doesn't say the tires popped off, it says the wheels were BROKEN off), they'd have to be going a good bit faster than 55. It's easy to draw some assumptions based on the "accident" damage, the age of the driver and the passenger, and my personal experiences as a 16-year-old male. While I'm thankful they apparently were not hurt, I just have to be concerned. This is an area where I ride my bicycle a lot, and there are other people who drive this road frequently. This is another example of people making bad choices that could have disastrous results for themselves and others. It's why I believe we should enforce traffic laws more stringently. " Maybe the city should think about making the speed limit 30 mph there. Everyone! And I mean everyone drives so fast on six points rd its like a race track!!! Theres a lot of houses along that road with a lot of little kids running around! I can't believe the speed limit is over 30 mph there anyways! It needs to be changed! "

" I am very familiar with this road and the area that this happened is very hilly and is in a 55mi per hour zone, so I am not sure where someone got the idea of ?35 but the kids probably were going about 55 which IS legal for that stretch of road but for a 16 year old who is new to driving and doesn't know every pot hole - they prpbably should have been going a lot slower for safety....so with a speed up at 55 it would be possible for the tire to land some 70 feet away..the kid driving probably never hit the brakes but just swerved....thank goodness they both weren't killed......hopefully the parents pull in the reighns on the car priviledges until they get some more instruction.... " so he swerved to miss an animal - just how fast was he going. I've missed animals before and haven't ended up hitting anything. Believe the story about the animal - check his speed - we all know that area is abundant with people who speed. Remember the brand new Mustang that ended up in the ditch out there? Forgive me, but he was testing his limits and found them. "

Purnelliejones wrote on Oct 18, 2007 6:34 AM:

" Age and speed! Not wet road, not dead animal. As you can see, it was not a live animal that jumped out in front of him, it was a dead animal! Dead animals in the road can usually be seen from a good distance, giving the driver ample time to slow down, manuver around or straddle the obect in the road. I did mention reduce speed. Tires broken off the car? A tire 70 feet from the car. Can that really happer at 35 mph?? "
