ISU Football Notes: ISU strong going into four-game stretch

NORMAL — A convincing victory over Indiana State has returned a sense of confidence to the Illinois State football team.

The Redbirds will need every bit of it.

Beginning with Saturday’s 3 p.m. (CDT) Gateway Conference game at No. 12 Youngstown State, ISU (3-4 overall, 1-2 in the Gateway) closes its season with four teams ranked in the top 20 of the Football Championship Subdivision.

“We’ve got a four-game stretch now that will kind of define our season,” Redbirds’ coach Denver Johnson said. “And we have a chance to redefine our season.”

After this weekend’s trip to Ohio, ISU returns home for Family Day on Oct. 27 against No. 17 Western Illinois. Nov. 3 brings a road game against No. 2 North Dakota State followed by a Nov. 10 contest in Carbondale against No. 9 Southern Illinois.

“We look forward to it, actually,” said free safety Tom Nelson. “It’s going to be a great challenge.”

“Hopefully, we can carry some momentum of the game into our next game,” offensive tackle Brandon Joyce said of the 69-17 whipping of Indiana State. “We would like to go into Youngstown’s house and really play solid ball and have another good outcome.”

Although the Penguins (5-2, 1-1) defeated ISU both in the regular season (27-13) and in the playoffs (28-21) in 2006, Johnson doesn’t see the revenge factor as a useful motivator.

“If we go around holding grudges, it’s counterproductive,” he said. “We can’t go back and change anything that’s already happened. I don’t think it serves any purpose to link this year with last year.”

St-Pierre hits the air

The NCAA On Campus show featuring ISU center Jonathan St-Pierre will be shown on ESPN Classic today at 11:30 a.m. and on ESPNU on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.

“My whole family will be watching in Canada,” St-Pierre said. “My parents can only come watch me play at my senior day next season, so they are very excited to watch me on TV. My mom has already pre-ordered plenty of copies of the show.”

The St-Pierre segment is hosted by ISU gymnast Amanda Candler, a broadcast journalism major.

Drone falls off list

ISU senior quarterback Luke Drone has been dropped from the watch list for the Walter Payton Award, which is presented to the top player in FCS.

Senior linebacker Kye Stewart remains on the watch list for the Buck Buchanan Award for the subdivision’s top defensive player.

Upon further review

An official scoring change has boosted ISU’s second-best single-game team rushing performance up 6 yards.

Cortes Rice was credited with 110 and not 104 yards on 15 carries as the Redbirds amassed 444 yards on the ground against Indiana State.

Older brother Rafael Rice had 182 yards on 25 carries and Geno Blow rushed for 122 yards on 23 attempts as ISU became the first team in Gateway history to have three runners reach 100 yards in the same game.

It was the sixth time the feat has been accomplished this season in Division I (FCS and FBS).
