Craig says he was entrapped in sex sting

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Idaho Sen. Larry Craig said he was entrapped in a sex sting at an airport men's room and was not aware of the bathroom's reputation as a spot to cruise for gay sex.

"Well, I certainly am now," Craig told NBC's Matt Lauer in an interview aired Tuesday night.

"Were you prior?" Lauer asked.

"Not at all," Craig responded. "I go to bathrooms to use bathrooms."

Craig said it was a "tough call" when he decided not to tell his wife or children about the arrest.

"I didn't want to embarrass my wife, my kids, Idaho and my friends," Craig said. "I should have told my wife. I should have told my kids. And most importantly, I should have told counsel."

Suzanne Craig said that when her husband told her the story was about to break, "I felt like the floor was falling out from under me. And I felt almost like I was going down a drain for a few moments."

Craig, a three-term Republican, pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct in August after he was accused of soliciting sex in a bathroom at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport in June.

After the matter became public, Craig tried to withdraw his plea. But a judge in Minnesota refused, saying Craig's plea "was accurate, voluntary and intelligent, and ... supported by the evidence." On Monday, Craig appealed that ruling to the Minnesota Court of Appeals.

"I hoped it would go away," Craig said of his decision to plead guilty. "I wanted to avoid a media storm."

Craig, 62, says he is not gay, and in the NBC interview, he and his wife said their marriage was based on love. Asked by Lauer whether theirs was a marriage of convenience to cover "a gay lifestyle," Suzanne Craig responded, "I would never do that. ... That's almost like selling your soul for something."

Suzanne Craig says she believes her husband is not gay. "I honestly believe my husband has always been faithful to me in every way," she said.

"I love this woman very, very much," Craig said in the interview, taped at the couple's home in suburban Eagle, Idaho. "And the day I found her I fell in love, deeply in love. And that's lasted - we're heading toward our 25th anniversary."

Craig also discussed his relationship with Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney. Craig was Senate liaison for Romney's campaign, a post he abandoned when the scandal became known. Romney called Craig's conduct "disappointing and disgraceful" and immediately dropped Craig when the guilty plea was revealed.

"I was very proud of my association with Mitt Romney," Craig said. "And he not only threw me under his campaign bus, he backed up and ran over me again."

Craig, who had initially said he planned to resign, reiterated that he will not leave his Senate seat until his term expires in January 2009. He has said he will not seek re-election.

Craig said he will continue to pursue his legal options.

" Entrapment?? Right - you can't possibly REALLY believe that. He's in the closet and trying desperately to stay there. End of story. I wish he would show a little dignity and just go away quietly. "

" Lets people decide his future, there are lot of dems that do such kind of things and they are making craig a scapegoat because he is Republican. The Senate should define the guide lines for all sting operations, the evidence procedures to be submitted in the court and educate people before they conduct stings "

" If it was an entrapment, how did they get him to tap his foot or get him to put his hand under the next stall. And if he did not have the intelligence to understand the difference between guilty and innocent plea in a court, how is he going to represent the cases of what people in his constituency want to the senate. I think he should have been flushed down the toilet instead of letting him step into the senate floor. There are other people you know who can represent the potato state. "

" wow you really can't think straight can you? Democrats have nothing to do with this. That bothers you so much you just can't stand it, right? Does it make you red with anger? It is his OWN party that wants him out. "

I think wrote on Oct 18, 2007 6:50 AM:

" he should stay in congress and let those who vote for him reelect or reject him. Think of some of the known things members of congress have admitted doing. If you dig at all you will find many in high trusted places that are getting by with much more than being "accused" of something. Some really did the deed and have admitted it. The only reason he is being asked to leave is because he is a Republican and everyone tries to smear them every chance they get. Democrats do similar stuff and get by with it. In fact they get reelected many times over and even run for president. It is time that the Republicans get the same treatment as Democrats. People need to start demanding it and the Republicans need to start standing up for themselves. Now! He shouldn't resign. If he were a Democrat he certainly wouldn't. "

" interesting that the clinton name comes up in comments about this scandal.i've alwas wondered if monica wasn't hired by clinton's political opponents to exploit bill's known weakness for the opposite sex. "

" I don't know who looked goofier during tha Matt Lauer interview, the Senator or his whacky-smiling wife. And we thought Hillary was a NUT-JOB for sticking by Bill thru the Monica mess? Jeez! Where are these women's DIGNITY? Lordy how it must FEEL to have a husband who seeks sex in a public men's room... Does it get any lower? I know gay people who would be ashamed and humiliated to be caught in such a predicament- and this crazy politician seems to be basking in the public atention of it all! "

A set up? wrote on Oct 17, 2007 4:47 PM:

" His constituents from Idaho set him up in an airport in Minnesota? Give me a break. The man feels guilty for his homosexual acts/thoughts and got caught buying a male prostitute. An innocent man doesn't try to hide this. And an intelligent man doesn't think that a Republican Congressman's guilty plea to gay sex is going to go under the radar. I just find all these gay-bashing conservative sex scandals hilarious. "

" If you're entrapped, you're enticed by law enforcement when otherwise you wouldn't have been. So he admits he was in the bathroom for his jollies? If you're wrongfully accused, then you didn't do anything. Can't seem to keep anything "straight". "

" this man was set up and I still say it. I do not believe he is gay, if he were it would of came out long before now. I think his constitutants set him up, reason, I don't know, but I believe he is innocent. Let's get that security officer to talk and find out how much he was given ($$$) to set this man up. This is the life of a politician. Not enough money for me to be one. "

" This is exactly why, when using a public bathroom, I remove all of my clothing and install a trapeze device that hangs between the stall walls. I then hang from said devise while performing required function. That way, there can be no misunderstandings concerning my intentions, and I also avoid contact with the toilet seat. Senator Craig should give this a try. "

The plea wrote on Oct 17, 2007 11:04 AM:

" In the interview, they mentioned that he pled guilty to "disorderly conduct," which I don't think gives details to the sex act itself. Take it for what it's worth. Personally, I think he's guilty. It's not just one thing, it's a combo. The specific pattern of foot taps and hand gestures, the plea agreements, the fact that he didn't tell his wife right away, it all adds up. If he does have a homosexual attraction, he's definately ashamed of it and doesn't want to (publicly) admit it. Not that I blame him for denying that. But the incident itself I think he was guilty, and now he's just trying to spin it. That's my assessment "

Meh wrote on Oct 17, 2007 10:55 AM:

Common Sense wrote on Oct 17, 2007 9:38 AM:

" He should have been dropped like a hot potato. His original choice was to 1 pead innocent or guilty. He had one month to decide. A conservitive republican asked to say yes or no that he solicited sex in a male bathroom. While that might not be the charge that he plead guilty to . I just cannot see a grown male republican submitting to that without a fight unless he is guilty or that nieve to beleive a guilty conviction would not be made public. So in loking at the Senator you have two options; 1. he is guilty and a perv or 2. Nieve and stupid for not consulting his lawyer to figure out his options. Either way, this does not make for a good leader and he should resign. "
