Skate park closes for renovations

NORMAL — Fairview Skate Park will be closed today through Oct. 24 for ramp removal and replacement and asphalt work.

The park will reopen Oct. 25.

Schools to dismiss for homecoming

NORMAL — Selected Unit 5 schools will be dismissed early Friday for Normal Community High School’s homecoming celebration.

Only NCHS feeder schools are affected. All other schools will be dismissed at regular times.

Dismissing at 1:15 p.m. will be Brigham, Fairview, Glenn, Grove, Hoose, Northpoint and Towanda grade schools. Chiddix Junior High will dismiss at 2 p.m.

ALP and SSP programs at those schools will be dismissed at 12:25 p.m., followed by BD programs at 12:30 p.m. NCHS will dismiss at 1:25 p.m.

Times for early childhood and pre-K programs at those schools will be 8:30 to 10:15 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Verizon gives grant to violence program

BLOOMINGTON — Verizon has given $20,000 to the Collaborative Solutions Institute for its “Prevention Skills for Women Caught in Domestic Violence” project.

The program provides assessments and counseling for women accused and/or convicted of perpetrating domestic violence.

Myth Busters plans visit to Illinois State

NORMAL — Discovery Channel’s popular “Myth Busters” visits Illinois State University, as two of the program members speak at 7 p.m. Nov. 3 in Braden Auditorium. 

Admission is free and open to the public.

“Myth Busters” investigates, through experimental processes, whether popular myths are true.  

Normal to begin collecting leaves

NORMAL - Vacuum leaf collection will begin Monday in Normal, and bagged leaves will no longer be collected.

Loose leaves should be raked to the back of the curb on the grass. Those who live in an area where cars are continuously parked in front of their residence should place the leaves at the edge of the driveway.

The leaf vacuum is designed only for leaves, so piles mixed with brush will not be collected.

Leaves need to be out by 7 a.m. on regular garbage collection day. Open burning is not allowed.

Town book drops will be moved

NORMAL — The Normal Public Library book drops located at Walgreens, 1101 N. Main St., are no longer available for use, effective immediately. The change was made because of a decision by Walgreens District Management.

The library is seeking a replacement location in north Normal.

Other offsite book drops are located at Jewel-Osco, 901 S. Cottage Ave.; the Normal Senior Center, 1110 Douglas St.; and the Shoppes at College Hills.
