Classic cars take to road with stops in Pontiac, B-N, El Paso
PONTIAC — Shirley Salm of Bourbonnais drives her ’65 Cadillac around town as part of her usual routine, but the end of this week will be different. She will be among the owners of about 40 classic cars who will tour Livingston, McLean and part of Woodford counties today through Saturday. “To see all of these cars in a nice long line is really neat,” said Salm, president of the Antique Automobile Club of America’s Illinois Region-Momence Chapter. Her club has organized the tour. Cars representing the 1950s through the 1970s will be seen taking to streets along with A handful of Ford Model T’s and Model A’s from the early 20th century. The oldest car expected to join the tour is a 1915 Model T, she said. The group will gather today at Hawthorne Suites, 1 Lyon Court, Bloomington, before heading to a tour early this afternoon at the Mitsubishi Motors North America plant in Normal. Other highlights of the tour will include visits to the Route 66 Hall of Fame and Museum, 110 W. Howard St., Pontiac on Friday, and a drive through Horizon Wind Energy wind farm site in northern Livingston County on Saturday. The tour also will make a quick stop at First Baptist Church, 515 N. Ladd St., Pontiac, for lunch Friday. “They requested our traditional sloppy joe luncheon, and we have done it a few times before for fundraisers and everybody really enjoys it,” church secretary Rhonda Cowsert said. “We are really happy to have them come.” The chapter has been on tours in Wisconsin, Michigan, Indiana and Illinois, but Salm said that this would be the first that they have come to McLean and Livingston counties. Tour members also plan to stop in El Paso to visit the Furrow Vineyard and Winery, the El Paso craft and antique malls, and the Beer Nut factory, 103 N. Robinson St., Bloomington. |
