5 years ago (2002): Normal West High School senior Meghan Braffet was named the nation’s Nike Athlete of the Week on the cross country and track Web site dystat.com. The unbeaten Braffet has the nation’s second-fastest 3-mile time at 16 minutes, 58 seconds.
15 years ago (1992): For the second straight year, Bloomington’s Aaron Culbertson won the Big 12 Conference cross country meet in record time as BHS placed second to Decatur MacArthur. Defending doubles champions Tracy Edmunds and Jenny Jaynes helped Bloomington repeat its girls sectional tennis title.
25 years ago (1982): Three area riders won races in the last BMX outdoor motocross events at Peoria’s Landmark Raceway. They were Don Whitwood of Normal, age 6 novice division; Eric Wright of Bloomington, age 11 novice class; and Leah Wilson of Danvers, 12 and under powder puff group.
50 years ago (1957): Wayne Marquis scored two touchdowns to lead Glenn Elementary School over Oakdale, 12-0, in the Normal Recreation Flag Football League, but Oakdale has already clinched at least a tie for the championship with a 3-1 record.
