Eureka's Klaus easily No. 1 among Class 1A runners

EUREKA — As her opponents may have suspected, running comes easy for Olivia Klaus, but it depends when you ask her.

“When I’m running, no (it’s not easy), but afterwards it’s like it wasn’t that hard,” said the Eureka High School senior, ranked No. 1 in the state in Class 1A by Illinois Prep Top Times heading into Saturday’s regionals.

Klaus has gone unbeaten against 1A foes this fall including No. 2-ranked Lauren Sible of Byron and No. 3 Alex Palm of Winnebago.

Klaus might have become queen sooner if not for four-time state champion Katelyn Bastert of Carthage, now a freshman at Duke.

Klaus misses Bastert’s friendly manner, but not her dominating ways.

“It’s nice to win sometimes,” noted Klaus, whose best 3-mile time is 17 minutes, 39 seconds.

Even without Bastert to chase, Klaus is running better than ever.

“She really hasn’t been pushed except in the first meet when she ran against some AA girls (and lost to Peoria Notre Dame’s Caitlin Comfort and Bartonville Limestone’s Nicole Benson),” said Coach Brett Charlton, who rates Klaus the strongest runner he has coached.

She got that way with help from more than 400 training miles last summer.

“I think her biggest strength is her work ethic,” Charlton said. “She’s one of those kids, like we’ve had in the past, you’ve almost got to hold them back.”

Charlton expects that work ethic will lead Klaus to even better results in college. The 4.0 student is being recruited by Miami of Ohio, Illinois State and Olivet Nazarene among others.

“I think she’s the leader for the whole program,” said Charlton, who also coaches the Eureka boys. “They see her in practice and see how hard she works. If you’re going to be good, you’ve got to work hard.”

Klaus has led her team to a No. 2 state ranking behind Winnebago.

“The good thing about her is she doesn’t seem to put much pressure on herself,” Charlton said. “She takes a lot of the focus off her running to help the team get better.”

In other words, the hard-working Klaus knows when to take it easy.
