High school notes: IHSA likes location boys golf tourneys
The boys’ three-class golf state tournaments were so successful last weekend, Kurt Gibson sees no reason to change anything. Gibson, the Illinois High School Association’s assistant executive secretary in charge of boys golf, said he heard some complaints about University High School being able to play the Class 2A State Tournament at its home course, Weibring Golf Club at Illinois State. But Gibson prefers to keep 1A at Prairie Vista Golf Course, 2A at ISU and 3A at The Den at Fox Creek Golf Course in the future. “I am not entertaining that idea (of switching sites every year),” he said. “The only way to do that would be to go through the advisory committee and take it to the board of directors.” U High finished with a state-tourney record 583 total in winning its fifth straight title. The first two of those titles came at Prairie Vista with the next two at The Den, proving it really doesn’t matter where the Pioneers compete. Gibson said cutting the number of players from 130 to 140 at each course to about 100 was much more manageable. “The bulk of the day was spent with everyone on the course. That’s what you want,” he said. “Going from one nine to the other nine, there was not a prolonged wait.” When ISU decided to build a new tennis facility on the intramurals field west of the course, it took away the driving range spot for Class 2A competitors. A bus took golfers to the range at Normal’s Ironwood Golf Course. “I thought going in there would be a concern about that, but I didn’t hear any and Laura (Provost, ISU club professional and tourney manager) didn’t hear any,” said Gibson. “We appreciate Ironwood working with the schools that came down. That worked out smooth. The schools liked the short game area (at ISU).” Brewer rushing along Mahomet-Seymour might need to advance at least to the second round of the playoffs for Andrew Brewer to break the all-time area rushing record. Then again, maybe not. The Bulldogs’ junior halfback has gained 1,633 yards heading into Friday night’s regular-season finale against U High at Hancock Stadium. The long-standing area record of 2,411 yards was set by Eureka’s Steve Ulrich in 1975. Brewer has gained 1,097 of those yards in three games — against Eureka (438), Rantoul (338) and Rochester (321). A win away University High, Eureka, El Paso-Gridley and Tremont are all 4-4 and need to win Friday night to qualify for at-large football playoff berths. U High has the toughest assignment, meeting Mahomet-Seymour (7-1) at Hancock Stadium. EPG is at home against Heyworth (5-3), Eureka plays at Rantoul (2-6) and Tremont is at Fisher (3-5). The IHSA will announce pairings Saturday night beginning at 8 o’clock. BHS in St. Louis Shootout The Bloomington basketball team will meet St. Louis Oakville at 12:30 p.m. on Dec. 8 in the Rameybasketball.com Midwest Showdown High School Shootout. BHS will play the second of seven games that day in an event to be held on the campus of Missouri-St. Louis in the Mark Twain Building at 8001 Natural Bridge Road in St. Louis.
