Out Loud: Aberle is the rock that cuts for Hawks

FAIRBURY — Prairie Central cross country runner Tim Aberle does not have any extravagant plans for Halloween. In fact, the senior is not really doing anything.

“I’m just going to stay home and help my mom out,” Aberle said.

That comes as a surprise.

When he is not running, Aberle remains active as he participates in the marching band and baseball. Following a recent practice, the Pantagraph caught up with a young man who aspires to be a high-school history or social studies teacher after graduating from Northern Illinois, Eastern Illinois or Illinois State.

Q: In order to do this interview, you had to win at “Rock, Paper, Scissors.” Which one of the three do you feel most confident in?

A: “Usually, I go for scissors. I always think first instinct goes for rock. Well, that would make me lose. I just kind of go with whatever.”

Q: What are you thinking about when you’re running a cross-country meet?

A: “Usually, I play a clip of a song I like just over and over again in my head.”

Q: At the last meet, what song was going through your head?

A: “It’s a 12 Stones song called ‘Adrenaline.’ It was just a 10-second clip.”

Q: What era of history is your favorite?

A: “I’d say first half of the 20th century, like World War I and World War II stuff. I just like the time period. World War II always interested me.”

Q: Why do you have such wild sideburns?

A: “I just kind of felt like growing them. There’s no real reason.”

Q: Are there any other weird things you’d want to do with your facial hair?

A: “I’d like to grow a beard. A big, bushy beard.”

Q: What is the best or worse thing about living in a small town?

A: “The best thing is it’s really quiet. Growing up, you have to find things to do. You don’t have a movie theater.”

Q: You play the trombone in the marching band. If you could add a trombone to any band, which would it be?

A: “I’d say Rush. They’re already influential because their music’s so full. A trombone would add to that depth.”

Q: You like “Prison Break.” If your brother was in prison, would you get the prison map tattooed on your back to help him escape?

A: “If it was like the show, then, yeah, I would.”

Q: You said you like the Smashing Pumpkins. What do you think of its comeback?

A: “I’m glad they’re back together. (Its) new album is very good.”

Q: You like the Chicago Cubs. Were you surprised they were swept in the playoffs?

A: “No. Maybe it’s bad, but I’m kind of expecting it.”

Q: What song do you listen to most on your iPod?

A: “A song called ‘Can’t Find My Way Home’ by Faith. It’s just a real peaceful song.”

Q: If you have spaghetti, do you have to have meatballs or just the sauce?

A: “Either way. It has to have parmesan cheese. I love parmesan cheese.”
