6-team IHL creates intense rivalries, but at what expense?

BLOOMINGTON — If familiarity breeds contempt, the six teams in the newly resurrected International Hockey League should have a snoot full by midseason.

Which is just what IHL officials are hoping for ahead of Saturday’s season opener, although they are quick to note the league’s return to old-style, physical hockey won’t leave room for goon squads and on-ice mayhem.

“We’re trying to take a combination of the old IHL when it was in its glory days and it was a small bus league with strong ownership, but getting away from the goon tactics and bringing it to the year 2007 where you might have occasional fisticuffs but not to the extent you saw in the old IHL,” said IHL commissioner Paul Pickard.

“We will make an example of players if they’re going to cross the line we’ve drawn as far as what’s acceptable. We’re just not going to tolerate or accept anything that would remotely come close to goon hockey.”

The second-year Bloomington PrairieThunder will be joined in the new IHL by the other five holdovers from the now-disbanded United Hockey League: Fort Wayne, Muskegon, Flint, Kalamazoo and Port Huron.

League members will be operating under a series of rules changes designed to produce more physical play. Referees have been instructed to call things tighter in the neutral zone to promote more of an offensive flow to the game but looser in the corners and in front of the nets to promote more physical play. Game-day rosters have also been increased from 18 players to 19, providing an opening for an extra enforcer.

Brad Jones, vice president of hockey operations for the IHL, said the move to more physical play began early last season in the UHL.

“We broke away from the NHL as far as the way they structured the game the last couple of years,” Jones said. “We certainly listened to the fans and owners as far as the game was called, and we loosened up the standard the last 20 weeks.

“By calling the game tighter through the neutral zone, we feel the speed and skill will also pick up, which in turn will allow for bigger hits. Allowing the play to continue in the attacking zone and those battles to develop, we’re going to see the physical side of the game that’s been lacking for the last five or six years.”

The IHL will play a 76-game schedule designed to develop more rivalries, and that should be easily accomplished with each team playing four opponents 15 times and the fifth 16 times.

“It’s going to be a tough year,” said Thunder coach Derek Booth. “It’s six teams battling it out every night. It’s going to be a lot of competition and a lot like last year where everybody beat everybody. That’s what fans pay for. They want those rivalries, and they want those competitive games.”

Veteran Thunder center and player/coach Jarrod Skalde, who played for the IHL’s last Turner Cup champions (the 2001 Orlando Solar Bears), said rivalries will be key to success.

“You would prefer a little more than a six-team league, but it’s going to create some good rivalries,” Skalde said. “We play each other so much — one right after the other, it seems. The fans will enjoy it. You play a Muskegon on a Saturday, and they’re right back here the next weekend.

“Fans will start to get to know the other teams and the enemy players they don’t like. We’ll see how it goes.”

Newly named Thunder captain Jason Ralph, a member of the UHL champion Rockford IceHogs last season, knows firsthand about the nuances of playing in a smaller league.

“When I was out in the old West Coast League we had seven or eight teams,” Ralph said. “We played Fresno 18 times one year. So if you get in a fight early in the season with a guy there’s a good chance you’re going to fight him three or four times just because you’re seeing each other so much.

“You get those guys that get under people’s skins, and it’s just going to accumulate and you’ll probably see more fights.”

Ralph said the Thunder is equipped to mix it up with anyone.

“If you look around we have a pretty big team,” Ralph said. “(Jeff) Ewasko is a (6-foot-7, 235-pound) giant who is going to be intimidating. (Jamison) Orr is going to be a real punishing body checker. We’ve got guys who are going to drop the gloves.

“They’re not fighters, but it helps out that you know someone has your back when you’re out there. You need that where all five guys play as a unit and they have each other’s backs. That way each player can play tougher.”

Pickard has been encouraged by the positive feedback he received during the IHL preseason.

“I’m sure we’re going to have a lot of leagues watching us as well as fans and media to see how it unfolds,” Pickard said. “In the last couple of weeks, I’ve done some interviews with radio stations in Canada that are very excited. The (thing) I kept hearing was it’s very refreshing to see a league bring back the old style of play.

“The jury is obviously still out, but if we can measure what we’ve seen in the preseason it’s certainly positive.”

" I think we have a great bunch of guys on our team. I think the Thunder team is going to ROCK THE HOUSE! I ready for the first home game. GO THUNDER GO!! "

" If you see no difference in the play between the U/IHL and the AHL then you deserve the league you're watching. The attention span of the average person in B/N is roughly 8 seconds. After the newness wears off the Thunder maybe rodeo is what needs to be in your arena. Hockey in B/N will die like a chain restaurant on Veterans. "

" Rivermen drew under 6000 for opening night and 3000 for their next game. So not very many people saw the Bules goalie doing his conditioning. How long do you think Bruce can pay for the expenses of an AHL team drawing 3000 a night? Answer: not long. Bloomingotn may be the only Hockey in Central Illinois sooner than you think. "

" Peoria has always had a problem with the classier B-N. B-N has a higher standard of living, less crime, less unemploymnet, and now we have a classy hockey team as well. The only thing they can find to rip on is our league with is sad for them. If the rivermen continue to draw 2500 a game they won't be in the AHL long. In fact, wasn't the Rivermen the AAA team for the Blues once before on lost that role due to bad attendance? Time will tell but their season tickets are already down from last year. "

" Fourty times a year the moon looks like a garbage truck. Then, mice eat all the corn in Maryland, and send the accoutants to Florida on a 3 wheeled bus. When I was a kid, I ate popcorn too. Build a treehouse for your dog, named Chief, and give him an eyepatch so he won't go blind. Too many times I've been lit on fire and it HURTS! Doompidy Doo. "

" Why all of the rips on Blm??? I supported the RM for 8 years season tix-wise and went for a long time after that, I saw a game that was in deline so I stopped going. You people that come down here and whine about how bad we are can stay in P-town. We dont want or need you here. Thunder hockey is alot better to watch than the RM are and I know that from exper. not just attitude, Id watch a mites game if it was a good game, thats what we have here, good games, sorry peoria, you do not, thats why I and alot of others left "

" I've been to both venues, and I must say that USCC is a better place to watch a game out of the two. The crowd is more into it and the fans are a lot closer to the action. As far as the hockey goes, there is not much difference. "

Hockey Fan wrote on Oct 19, 2007 11:59 AM:

" A true hockey fan couldn't find anything resembling hockey at the USCC. The hour trip is well worth it and then some. Look around, 99% of the audience are busy with their elephant ears and budweisers and completely uninterested until some bozo drops gloves. "

" as far as your Goon comment, The rivermen had more PIM per game than The Thunder did last year. How long you been a "Hockey Fan"? I am a Rivermen fan but I am definitly a THUNDER fan and cant wait for the season to start, this is how Hockey was supposed to be played, a real physical battle. I am excited for 10/26 the home opener, and if "hockey fan" wants to see the game let me know, Ill buy you a aticket, you can sit next to me and maybe learn a thing or two. "

" was on the decline in minor league hockey across the board. It wasn't just Peoria. Since Bloomington had 0 attendance the year before, you saw an increase. give it a few years and see where your attendance is. possibly back where you started.....0 "

I agree wrote on Oct 19, 2007 8:41 AM:

" The only reason I would go to Bloomington for hockey is to watch a little goon style hockey. Peoria is a class act AAA level hockey team. Even tonight, Peoria has the blues 2nd goalie down for condioning. When will you see that in Bloomington.....NEVER!!!!!!!!! Is the new IHL even a aingle-A level now since they are getting away from the "NHL structure" "

Hockey Fan wrote on Oct 19, 2007 8:15 AM:

" Rivermen hockey has become a bunch of almost-beens on skates and is just boring. Look at their attendance last year and it tells you I'm not the only one who sees that. It dropped steadlly over the season and their season ticket sales are down. Heck, the Thunder almost out drew them for the season, and did on many nights. Your comment on the Bloomington fans is not only wrong, it's just ignorant. Afterall, most if not all of the fans here were once Riverman fans. Once. The Thunder is more fun to watch, our arean is nicer and the price is much more reasonable. "

" The one person in town that is actually silly enough to drive an extra hour, pay for parking and pay more per ticket to watch the same thing actually posted a comment to justify his/her actions. If you wanna waste your money, go right ahead, but don't insult our hockey team or the way it is run. I happen to remember the 'old' IHL included your precious Rivermen (Prancers), your organization was built on "goon squads or whatever else" "

Hockey Fan wrote on Oct 18, 2007 10:11 PM:

" The only reason the hammerheads in this town go to see the hockey is the fights. Plain and simple. They couldn't pick out a quality hockey game if it was in a police lineup. So bring back the goon squads or whatever else, I will continue to go to Peoria, where at least it looks like hockey. "
