5 years ago (2002): Bloomington sophomore Matt Bova picked a good spot for his first hole in one. He aced the 13th hole with a 9-iron at The Den at Fox Creek Golf Course for a 7-over 79 that helped the Purple Raiders move into third place after the first round of the wind-blown Class AA Boys State Golf Tournament.
15 years ago (1992): Defensive tackle Bill Havle was selected CCIW Defensive Player of the Week for his role in Illinois Wesleyan’s 21-0 victory over Augustana. He made four solo tackles and assisted on six others in helping IWU take sole possession of first place and remain unbeaten with a 5-0 record.
25 years ago (1982): No Illinois Wesleyan football team in modern history had a more closely bunched trio of runners than did the Titans in a 24-7 victory over North Park. J.C. Anderson’s team leading 112 yards was supplemented by 84 from fullback Warren DeNardo and 82 from quarterback John Rooney.
50 years ago (1957): Trinity quarterback Ron Carlson scooped up a Normal Community fumble on his own 35-yard line, outraced everyone for a 65-yard touchdown sprint with 1:09 remaining, and then kicked the precious point that enabled the Saints to gain a 14-14 tie with the Ironmen.
