Brief previews of area cross country regionals

Class 1A



Eureka Regional

When: Saturday – girls at 9 a.m.; boys at 9:45 a.m. (at Eureka Lake)

Area teams: El Paso-Gridley, Eureka, Deer Creek-Mackinaw, Illini Central, Fieldcrest, Tremont

Teams advance to: Elmwood Sectional

FYI: Tremont junior Parker Thompson won the Class A state 1,600-meter track title last spring while Fieldcrest senior Brian Peterson ran second in the 3,200. … The girls race brings together the No. 2- and 3-ranked teams in the state in Eureka and Tremont, respectively. … Eureka, winner of nine straight regional titles, is led by three-time regional champion Olivia Klaus.

Monticello Regional

When: Saturday – girls at 10:30 a.m.; boys at 11:15 a.m.

Area teams: Cornerstone, Tri-Valley, Heyworth, Tri-Valley

Teams advance to: PBL Sectional

FYI: Tri-Valley junior Stephanie Brown, third in the state last fall, has battled various health issues this season.

Beecher Regional

When: Saturday – girls at 10 a.m.; boys at 11 a.m.

Area teams: Lexington, PBL

Teams advance to: PBL Sectional.

FYI: The PBL boys are ranked 13th in the state while Panther sophomore Tom Pacey is ranked 15th.

Seneca Regional

When: Saturday – girls at 10 a.m.; boys at 10:30 a.m.

Area team: Dwight-Gardner

Teams advance to: Aurora Christian Sectional

FYI: Dwight-Gardner’s Mitch Small placed eighth in the Prairie Central Invitational.

Class 2A



Olympia Regional

When: Saturday – girls at 10 a.m.; boys at 11 a.m.

Area teams: Central Catholic, Clinton, Delavan, Lincoln, University High, Olympia

Teams advance to: Peoria Notre Dame Sectional.

FYI: U High’s boys, led by Corn Belt Conference champion Kevin Forde, are ranked 10th in the state and the Pioneer girls are ranked 30th. … Delavan junior Kody Nelson placed fifth in last year’s Class A state meet. … Central Catholic’s No. 33-ranked girls squad is led by Corn Belt runner-up Kelly Curran.

Urbana Regional

When: Saturday – girls at 10 a.m.; Boys at 11 a.m.

Area teams: Prairie Central, Mahomet-Seymour.

Teams advance to: Peoria Notre Dame Sectional.

FYI: Mahomet-Seymour’s Corn Belt Conference champion girls are ranked fourth in the state while the Bulldog boys are 19th.

Metamora Regional

When: Saturday – girls at 10 a.m.; boys at 10:45 a.m.

Area teams: Pontiac, Streator

Teams advance to: Peoria Notre Dame Sectional

FYI: Streator’s Jon Richards won the North Central Illinois Conference Meet Reagan Division title in 15:47. He has run 16:01 on the state meet course.

Class 3A



NCHS Regional

When: Saturday – girls at 10 a.m.; Boys – 11 a.m. (at Maxwell Park)

Area teams: Bloomington, Normal West, Normal Community

Teams advance to: Normal West Sectional.

FYI: The Big 12 Conference champion Normal West boys are ranked third in their sectional while the NCHS girls, winners of seven straight Big 12 crowns, are ranked seventh. … The BHS boys have advanced for 27 consecutive years. … Ashley Verplank of BHS will be going for her fourth regional title.

Note: The top five teams and top five individuals not on those teams advance Oct. 27 sectionals.
