MOUNT PROSPECT — The Normal Community High School doubles team of Kendyl Fisher and Kristen Laird highlighted Pantagraph area efforts in the 35th annual state tennis tournament Thursday with a 6-2, 6-0 upset of Barrington’s No. 17-32-seeded Dana Pierce and Sonam Jaglan in the consolation second round.

Fisher and Laird helped the area win seven of 17 matches in “horrendously” gusting wins as the tournament began its three-day run.

NCHS is tied for 38th place with five points while Bloomington is tied 59th with three. Hinsdale Central leads with 22.

Fisher and Laird opened with a 6-1, 6-2 triumph over Mount Carmel’s Erica Bramlet and Emily Tinsley before falling to the No. 5-8 seeded Lake Forest duo of Hollis McPeek and KIathleen Saltarelli, 6-2, 6-1. In the consolation third round, Fisher and Laird beat Highland Park’s Emily Smith and Jessie Perlstein, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.

“That last match they had to fight a case of the nerves,” said NCHS coach Jim Boswell. “It gets tight up here sometimes. They stopped playing like they were playing. They just kind of held on.

“Knowing they would get to play on Friday (if they won), I think that kind of helped them. That was one of their big goals.”

Fisher and Laird take a 26-13 record into today’s fourth-round consolation match against the No. 17-32-seeded Elizabeth Howard and Maggie Fulling of Rockford Boylan.

In singles, Bloomington junior Tara Clemens (23-12) went 2-1. She opened with a 6-0, 6-1 decision over Belleville Althoff’s Emily Cimarolli, who had beaten Clemens earlier this season.

Jessica Wacnik of Palos Hills Stagg, a No. 17-32 seed, then downed Clemens, 6-0, 6-0. Wacnik is a world-ranked junior player, who opened her high school season in the sectional.

“She looked good,” said BHS coach Ed Rozboril of Clemens. “We worked on several things over the last two-day period and all of a sudden it started clicking.”

In the consolation second round, Clemens overcame a 5-2 deficit in the first game to top Chicago Marist’s Shea Hennessy, 7-5, 6-2. Clemens faces Buffalo Grove’s Nell Boyd at 8 a.m. today in a match that was postponed from Thursday after the start of play was delayed more than two hours because of wet courts.

“It was a question of thinking her way through it,” Rozboril said of Clemens’ final match. “We talked to her on the change over. She followed the plan and it started working.”

University High freshman Sienna Reuter (18-14) went 1-2, opening with a 6-0, 6-0 loss to No. 17-32 seed Bryna Nasenbeny of Aurora Waubonsie Valley before topping Marion’s Madeleine Fuerst, 6-3, 6-0. Reuter was eliminated after a 6-2, 6-2 loss to Chicago Young’s Brittany Ballog.

Two-time state qualifier Ava Maxwell of NCHS (20-12) went 0-2, losing to No. 3-4 seed Julie Flanzer, 6-0, 6-0, and Lake Zurich’s Ingrid Brauer, 6-2, 7-5.

“Everybody out there was tough,” Boswell said. “There was no place to hide in that part of the draw.”

The NCHS doubles team of Emily Gannon and Jessica Steach (15-9) went 1-2, opening with a 6-0, 6-0 loss to the No. 17-32 seeded team of Taylor Hampshire and Allie Newmark of Winnetka New Trier. Gannon and Steach bounced back with a 6-3, 6-2 triumph over Homewood-Flossmoor’s Samantha Goodwin and Chelsea Neich. The two Ironmen were eliminated after a 7-5, 6-7, 6-4 setback against Belleville East’s Amy Bruyneel and Victoria Seabaugh.

“They could have beaten Belleville,” said Boswell, noting Steach had a 103-degree temperature Wednesday. “She was a trooper. She had to muster up all the energy she could to complete the day.”

U High’s Amanda Lawler and Kathleen Johnson (17-14) were eliminated after a 6-4, 6-0 loss to Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin’s Edy Graham and Jaclyn Tracy and a 6-0, 6-0 loss to Highland Park’s Emily Smith and Jessie Perlstein.
