EFFINGHAM -- America's sports car takes center stage at the 14th annual Corvette Funfest at Mid America Motorworks Friday through Sept. 23 in Effingham.

Last year's gathering, billed as one of the largest Corvette events in the nation, drew more than 45,000 Corvette enthusiasts and 14,000 Corvettes.

The theme of the 2007 Corvette Funfest is "Celebrating a Corvette Summer." The very 1973 Corvette Stingray used in the 1978 movie of the same name will be there. Actor Mark Hamill, pre-Star Wars, drove actress Annie Potts around in her first big motion picture.

The car is now in the personal collection of Mid America Motorworks founder Mike Yager. Yager's collection also features the priceless CERV-1, a rare Chevrolet Engineering Research Vehicle, and a 1964 World's Fair Mitchell Styling Corvette. All three will be on display during Funfest.

George Barris, one of Hollywood's most famous vehicle creators who designed the original 1966 Batmobile and the Munster Koach, will serve as a judge for the Funfest Corvette Show. He also will host seminars on topics ranging from carburetor tuning, trouble- shooting, and better braking, to suspension tuning, and autocross. Automotive writer Dave Emanuel and National Corvette Museum Hall of Fame inductee Gordon Killebrew are among presenters.

You can fill a library with books specifically on Corvettes and authors responsible for several of them will be at the fest. They include Richard Newton, who wrote "101 Projects for Your Corvette 1984-1996," "Corvette C5 Performance Projects 1997-2004," "How to Restore & Modify Your 1968-82 Corvette" and the "Ultimate Garage Handbook"; Mike Antonick, author of the "Corvette Black Book"; and Mike Mueller, who wrote "The Complete Book of Corvettes."

Yager and John Gunnell will unveil their new book, the "Corvette Bible," a year-by-year review of each Corvette model with insider information and tips, and Keith Martin will launch the new Corvette Market Magazine.

Entertainment includes the rock band Three Dog Night from 8:30 to 10 p.m. Saturday, and Blue Suede Crew, an Elvis and Johnny Cash tribute band, that will perform from 5 to 7 p.m. that same night.

To register your Corvette for the contest, visit www.mamotorworks.com/funfest. Cost is $15.

Cars also will be for sale.

To reach Mid America Motorworks, take exit 162, the Effingham-Sigel exit, from Interstates 57 and 70. Turn right onto Illinois 45 North and go two miles.

Mid America Motorworks permits camping on the grounds during Funfest. Port-a-potties and hand-washing stations are available, but there's no utility hook-ups and no open fires are allowed.

Call (800) 500-1500 or visit www.mamotorworks.com for more information.

" Is this the same Corvette show that use to be Bloomington Gold? I always loved seeing the Vettes on the road, especially the 60's when they would be on Old 66. "
