Oct. 21 EUREKA COLLEGESpecial ed teaching program offered EUREKA — In January, Eureka College will begin offering a special education teaching approval program, with the Illinois Board of Higher Education’s recent OK. The Eureka program will offer curriculum to meet the learning behavior specialist I approval for certified teachers. That certification allows those individuals to teach in a special education classroom or collaborative general education setting. Classes will meet one night a week through next summer. For information, visit www.eureka.edu or contact Karen Bruning, director of the lifelong learning program, at (309) 467-6678 or by e-mail at LLEdCtr@eureka.edu. Those interested should contact Bruning by Nov. 1. EASTERN ILLINOISCampus supports organ donation CHARLESTON — It’s the sort of decision college students may not think much about — like drafting a will or pre-planning a funeral — but Donate Life Illinois has turned organ donation registration into a competition between campuses, and Eastern Illinois University has joined the race to get the word out about the need to re-register since Jan. 1, 2006. The Agency, a student-run public relations group, has hosted a table in the EIU student union to encourage students to sign up there or online. “We were just shouting out to people, ‘Have you registered to be an organ donor since Jan. 1?’” said Katrina Zaret, student director of The Agency. Anyone can join the new donor registry by visiting the Donate Life Illinois campaign site at www.IAmAreYou.org; visiting any driver’s license facility; or by calling the Illinois Secretary of State Organ/Tissue Donor Program at (800) 210-2106. The campaign runs through the end of the month. WESTERN ILLINOISEGO conference set next month MACOMB — Western Illinois University’s English Graduate Organization will host its fourth annual EGO Conference Nov. 9-10. In conjunction with the university’s 2007-2008 theme, “Global Challenges and Personal Responsibility — Environmental Sustainability,” the event’s theme is “The Future of Sustainability: Social Equality, Economy and Environment.” The conference will begin with the 7 p.m. Nov. 9 keynote address by Scott Slovic, professor of literature and environment at the University of Nevada, Reno. Slovic’s presentation, “Living Lightly and Inconsistently on the Campus: Sustainability and the Academic Life,” will include information about his work on energy literature in relation to lifestyle and consciousness. His presentation, which is free to the public, will be in 109 Morgan Hall. Nov. 10 activities will include individual paper presentations by students and faculty from Western Illinois University; University of Wisconsin-Madison; University of Florida; and University of Yaounde I, Cameroon. SOUTHERN ILLINOISState court justice speaks at SIUC CARBONDALE — Love what you do, and let what you do be shaped by what you love. That was the message Illinois Supreme Court Justice Anne Burke delivered to an audience in the Southern Illinois University Carbondale Student Center last week. The Chicago native, whose work has included helping to form the International Special Olympics and reforming the state’s juvenile justice system, talked about her career during the speech. The talk was part of the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute’s 2007 Jeanne Hurley Simon Lecture Series, named for the late senator’s late wife. From Burke’s days as a physical education teacher in Chicago to her current appointment on the state supreme court, the justice said her overarching goal has been to speak up for people, especially those who are impoverished or abused. Burke has spoken out for special needs children, a personal interest as much as a public one, since one of her adoptive sons has special needs. Michele Steinbacher of the Pantagraph, Lisa Bartelt of the Journal Gazette and Times-Courier, Caleb Hale of the Southern Illinoisan and Western Illinois University contributed to this report. |
