GIBSON CITY — Young wrestlers soon will have a new place to spread out their mats at Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley High School.

Michelle Rosenbaum of GCMS Youth Wrestling told the school board last week the club will commit $20,000 over five years to build a wrestling area at the school.

The board already had been considering building a new all-purpose addition to the present weight room, and the wrestling area will be part of that.

Superintendent Charles Aubry said this addition would allow the wrestling mats to stay in one area all the time.

The addition may displace the high school’s tennis courts, Aubry said.

The school district and Gibson City officials have been discussing having the district build new tennis courts east of the swimming pool at North Park.

The school district would build the courts on city property and then sign an agreement with the city over their use.

Ford County budget — The Ford County Board unanimously passed a $3.57 million budget that calls for $594 in revenue than expenses.

Employee raises for courthouse employees will be about 3 percent, said finance committee Chairman Rick Bowen. Negotiations with the union representing sheriff’s department employees are to begin soon.

The board expects to save money by switching its general liability and worker’s compensation coverage to Counties of Illinois Risk Management Association, a self-insured alliance of similar counties.

The move could save the county from almost $20,000 to about $45,000, said board member Jim Kietzman, who chairs the board’s personnel and insurance committee.

State delay decried — Superintendent Larry Dodds of the Colfax-based Ridgeview school district bemoaned the “lack of action” from Illinois political leaders during a report last week tot eh school board.

Dodds faulted state House Speaker Michael Madigan, state Senate President Emil Jones and Gov. Rod Blagojevich for “severely” hampering school plans for fiscal 2009.

The board also heard the high school marching ban dplaced fourth at the Oct. 6 Washington High School Field Competition.

Speaker scheduled — Quincy-based 8th Judicial Court Circuit Judge Mark Drummond will present “Seven Reasons to Leave the Party” to Ridgeview students and parents Oct. 29 and 30 at the high school auditorium. The program is described as a primer for students on rights and wrongs they face as growing decision makers.

Mark Balthazar also contributed to this report.
