5 years ago (2002): University High advanced to the third round of regional soccer play by breezing past Mount Pulaski, 14-0. U High had 11 players score in the match, including goalie Chance Walker on a penalty kick. Walker didn’t have to make a save as the Pioneers out shot the Hilltoppers 29-1.
15 years ago (1992): Justin Denman received Holy Trinity Grade School’s Dean Award, named for baseball program founder Dean Steinkoenig and given to the baseball player who demonstrates good sportsmanship and hustle. Holy Trinity finished second in the Illinois Elementary School Association Class A State Tournament.
25 years ago (1982): Chicago Bulls public relations director Tim Hallam and Chicago accountant Greg Linhart are the 1982 recipients of the Duffy Bass Grand Slam Award, given each fall by Illinois State baseball coach Duffy Bass to former ISU players who distinguished themselves both on the field and after their playing careers.
50 years ago (1957): Joe Theis of Bloomington, who was the No. 2 catcher at Albany, N.Y., last season, has been notified that he will play for the Memphis Chicks. Theis will have an opportunity to meet his new boss, Danny Menendez, this weekend when the Chicks general manager is here for Illinois Wesleyan’s homecoming.
