The Heartland Community College women’s soccer team opened first-round play in the Midwest Athletic Conference regional tournament with a 3-2 win over Parkland Community College on Sunday at the University High Field in Normal.

Heartland built its lead to 3-1 by halftime as Ashley Bringle scored in the 14th minute on an assist from Tiffany Zafras and Normal Community’s Jill Hedrick set up Calvary Baptist product Sarah McCorkle in the 32nd minute.

Parkland pulled to within 3-2 on a goal by Linda Hernandez in the 58th minute. The Cobras had a solid chance to tie the game in the 65th minute but Heartland goal-keeper Abby Eckstine made an outstanding save to preserve the victory for the Hawks.

Heartland advances to second-round play and will face Illinois Central College on Thursday at East Peoria.
