CCHS boys soccer advances to state for first time ever

CHILLICOTHE -- Central Catholic boys soccer coach Patric Molinari kept a clear game plan Monday night. “We have to keep pushing; push the game to the other team and apply pressure,” he said.

With the Saints’ speed on offense and their seemingly impenetrable defense, the Saints have pushed themselves to their first ever IHSA Class A state tournament after a 4-1 victory over Macomb in the Chillicothe IVC Sectional championship.

“We’re so excited. We’ve wanted this all year, and we’ve worked so hard (that) it finally came for us,” senior forward Patrick Kniery said.

The Saints (14-3-2) continue to push the bar on the school’s single-season wins mark. Their next chance to add to the total will be at 11 a.m. Friday when they face Chicago F.W. Parker in the quarterfinals of the state tournament in Naperville.

On this wet and windy night, the Saints not only pushed the action from the opening kickoff - they controlled it. In the second half, it took Macomb nearly 15 minutes to get the ball on its offensive half as the Saints outshot the Bombers 20-7.

Kniery netted a pair of goals, with his first proving to be the game-winner. For Kniery, it had been a while since he found the back of the net.

“I was due a goal,” he said. “I haven’t scored in four or five games, I finally came through tonight.”

In the 29th minute, the Saints earned a free kick from 40 yards out to the right of the goal. Junior Kendall Cox took the kick and chipped the ball into the 6-yard box where Kniery was waiting. The ball bounced once, and Kniery flew through the air to volley it in, putting the Saints up 2-0.

Andrew Tank made it 3-0 with a goal in the 52nd minute, and Kniery scored again 5 minutes later. Central’s Thomas Prior scored the game’s first goal in the 12th minute.

With the Saints holding a commanding 4-0 lead, the Bombers finally got on the board in the 67th minute on a 35-yard shot from Kooten Johnson. It was the first goal the Saints had surrendered in three postseason games.

Peppering the goalie was part of Macomb coach Jeff Moore’s plans, which were spoiled by the Saints stingy defense.

“You have to put shots on goal, that’s all there is to it,” Moore said. “I have to hand it to them; they really played tough in the back. It was hard to get through that back line. They always had someone with a foot on the ball or a head on it.”

Despite being outshot, the Bombers (10-8-1) did have a couple of quality scoring opportunities mostly resulting from headers. But Saints goalkeeper Ben Kelch and the rest of the defense was up to task.

“Our defense is what keeps us together,” Kniery said. “They really come through when we need them to.”

With the conditions difficult, the Saints relied on long passes to their quick forwards for scoring opportunities.

Molinari said Central’s midfielders looked for space to pass to allow the forwards to get to the balls and pressure the defense.

“Today that was a great option for us, but we don’t just kick the ball,” Molinari said. “Today was the type of the game where we could do that.”

" Personally, it's a known fact that central illinois soccer the loewst of the chain. Every year the teams get worse and the competition gets worse. All the good teams use to be 1A all got bumped up to 2A. For that reason is why CCHS is making it to state. The time they really had potential and quality college soccer players was the class of 2006. They played school with good talent as well as showed their own ability and good skill. The "state players" of this year havent even made all intercity some of the players did in 2006 or if they did they would never have if they played for the 2006 team. Most of the guys that play now never really got playing time for the 2006 team, that just says something... "

" The soccer bracket is "watered down" because the sport sadly does not have the massive amount of attention that football does. Last time I checked (and I don't even have to check because I garuntee it's a fact) the number of high school football teams in Illinois outnumbers the amount of high school soccer teams 2-1. That's a fact. Accept it. Anyway, I'm glad the team made it this far and hopefully they can walk away with a state championship. Last year was a huge upset and the team is definetely making up for lost ground. "

" check your math. three games to get to state and three games at state if you make it to the winners bracket. point is, the regional is weak with two games, the sectional is weak with one game, and if you think differently, then so be it but it's still weak regardless of which way you look at it. "

" Actually the kids on the various sports teams support each other really well at CCHS. The reason you don't see the football players at soccer games is because the soccer games are generally played at 4:00 or 4:30 during the week or 10:00 on Saturday mornings. The football team is practicing at these times. GO SAINTS, CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL THE PLAYERS, COACHES AND SUPPORT STAFF. "

" Congrats to the soccer team but they're going to have to win a few championships before they will ever be more than a sideshow to the main event. Hopefully they can start to form some tradition with a championship this year! "

" Are you sure it only takes four wins to be a state football champion? I think you might want to check that again. "

To Playoffs wrote on Oct 23, 2007 2:45 PM:

" I would agree with you that the football system is watered down with 8 classes! In football you only need 5 victories in the playoffs to win state (two to be in the top 8). Soccer requires 7 or 6 in the case of the Saints who had a bye the first round. Also, you have to win 3 games in two days for the championship. "

to:playoffs wrote on Oct 23, 2007 2:42 PM:

" check out the brackets, it takes 2 wins for football to get to the final 8, and 4 wins to be state champ. soccer would take 7 wins without the bye. as far as watering down the system, i believe soccer is still A and AA and football has 8 classes, so what sport is watered down more ? hope you can see that football is allot more watered down than soccer. "

" seems like a piece of cake to make state only playing three games. so much for the watered down system of the ihsa. "

What A Quandary wrote on Oct 23, 2007 1:34 PM:

" Let's see: A soccer team (futbol) that is going to the state tournament as part of the Elite Eight already and football program that just completed an undefeated season and is headed towards a multi-win post season. The Athletic Director must be beside himself watching some blog junkies argue about which of his teams gets more attention. Great job Coach Atkins, Coach Moews, and Coach Molanari! "

" it must be tough to play in the sahdow of one of the best soccer teams in the state. maybe some of the cchs football fans should support the soccer team more since the soccer players support you ? i have yet to see one football player at a cc soccer game this year. PRETTY SAD!!!!!! "

" Addison seems about as far as Naperville which is where they play next. TDOG, which is a rediculous name btw, must have done some scouting and I wish he would let me know who the best team in 4A is. Also, I would like to know when TDOG has seen that team play this year. Tell me he's actually seen the teams he's talking about and not just speculating..... "

To Overshadowed wrote on Oct 23, 2007 12:28 PM:

" The soccer has worked hard to become one of the top teams in Class 1A. Now it is up to the football team to do the same and maybe we will have two state championship trophies for the display case. Keep in mind rankings mean nothing. What counts is what happens on the field. Go Saints soccer and football. "
