5 years ago (2002): Normal Community’s volleyball team clinched a share of the Big 12 Conference championship with a 15-7, 15-8 decision before an overflow crowd at Normal West. … Central Catholic won its first Corn Belt Conference title by defeating Mahomet-Seymour, 15-4, 15-8.
15 years ago (1992): Dave Gannaway resigned as athletic director and assistant principal at University High School effective at the end of the school year. He is in his seventh year as athletic director and second year as assistant principal at his alma mater.
25 years ago (1982): Central Catholic’s football team marched to its first state playoff berth in grand fashion with a rousing 72-0 Corn Belt Conference victory over Pontiac. Jim Killoran got the Saints started on the right track by returning the game’s opening kickoff 98 yards for a touchdown.
50 years ago (1957): C.W. Whitten, the “Grand Old Man” of Illinois high school athletics who served from 1922 to 1944 as executive secretary of the Illinois High School Association, died at his home in St. Petersburg, Fla. He had planned his annual trip to Normal this month to visit his daughter, Dr. Jennie Whitten of the ISU faculty.
