County still calculating cost of gas leak

BLOOMINGTON -- McLean County officials should know later this week how much Thursday’s natural gas leak outside the Law & Justice Center cost the county.

A backhoe operator struck a gas line about 8:50 a.m., forcing evacuation of the Law & Justice Center and nearby Health Department offices. Because repairs could not be made quickly, workers were sent home for the day. Court cases and health department appointments had to be canceled.

“We had to pay all those people but no work was done,” said County Administrator John Zeunik.

Zeunik said the county likely will file a claim with the general contractor’s insurance for the cost of losing a business day.

Felmley Dickerson Co. is general contractor for the parking lot renovation project that was underway when the gas line was hit. The company is in the final phase of the project that will make a formerly separated lot into one large lot, providing better access and more parking spaces.

" I thought these union operators and labors where well trained by their organizations. Sounds like they need to hire someone that knows what a hand shovel and gas line look like. "

" I did read the article and that is why I asked my original question, why should we pay? The county Likely? Likely does not pick up the tab for this fiasco, the taxpayers do. The fact the county MAY decide to file or LIKELY file is something we sit back and wait to see. Who is paying, WE ARE, so unless you two want to step up with your check books open to fill in some numbers, I suggest you remain silent and seated. The money initially will come from our pockets as I said to begin with. WOW these guys are real sharp. "

" To "Why should we pay": Did you not read where it said, "Zeunik said the county likely will file a claim with the general contractor’s insurance for the cost of losing a business day." They are going to try to get someone else to pay for it. Get over the fact that we have to pay taxes, it's always going to be this way, they will do what they can to get it paid for otherwise. Quit complaining! "

" I understand your questions and concerns, but it "sounds like" you don't know much about construction and liability. Several policies, jurisdictions, etc. may play a part. So, until more details are sorted out between the County, City, FDCo., etc. the County may have to use "our" money to pay for the leak. "

Why Should We Pay? wrote on Oct 23, 2007 12:43 PM:

" when it says the county pays it means the taxpayers pay and why is this? If a contractor hit the line with a machine when digging why should the contactor not be held responsible? If I hire Acme pools to dig a hole to install a pool on my property and they hit a gas line, it is them that is liable, not me. This is sounding like a good ole boy contract again being done at the taxpayers expense to cover up inadequate work on the part of a contractor awarded the work by someone on the county board. I DEMAND AN INVESTIGATION IN THIS MATTER, "
