BLOOMINGTON — Seven volunteers with the Bloomington-based American Red Cross of the Heartland are among thousands of Red Cross volunteers who will help Southern California residents displaced by wildfires.

The volunteers are: Phyllis Bardonski of Hudson; Jerry Hayes and Duane Mock, both of Gridley; Janice Miller of Clinton; Donna Tambling and Jim Kaiser, both of Bloomington; and Steve Kroll of Normal.

Hayes, Mock, Miller and Tambling left Tuesday, and Bardonski will fly out this morning, said Scott Vogel of the Heartland chapter. Kroll and Kaiser will drive the chapter’s emergency response vehicle and are scheduled to leave this morning and arrive in Southern California sometime Saturday, Vogel said.

The ERV is a mobile feeding vehicle that’s about the size of an ambulance. Kroll and Kaiser will deliver food to areas where people have not evacuated and will transport food from kitchens to shelters, Vogel said.

As of late Tuesday afternoon, the Red Cross had opened 11 shelters housing 3,856 residents, Vogel said. He was expecting that number to increase substantially.

Exactly where Heartland chapter volunteers will be working was unknown Tuesday, Vogel said. The American Red Cross national Web site didn’t specify how many volunteers were on their way to Southern California, except to say that thousands were en route.

Bardonski will be a client case volunteer, working with people who had to evacuate their homes, making sure their basic needs of food, clothing, shelter and medicine are being met, Vogel said.

Hayes, Mock and Miller will be feeding volunteers, providing meals to displaced people and emergency response workers. Tambling will be a shelter volunteer, making sure a shelter is set up properly and that the needs of people there are being met, Vogel said.

All volunteers were asked to help for at least 10 days.
