Police: Springfield sex offender tries to castrate himself
Advertisement

SPRINGFIELD -- A convicted sex offender tried to castrate himself with a fillet knife, apparently after having an urge to offend again, according to a police report.

The 59-year-old man removed one of his testicles Sunday night and flushed it down the toilet. The other testicle was severely injured.

The man, who was not identified in the police report, called a friend for help and police and paramedics found him bleeding profusely when they arrived. Police said he was expected to survive.

The man told police he was feeling the urge to touch and hurt children, the (Springfield) State Journal-Register re-ported Tuesday, and wasn’t trying to kill himself but was trying to stop that urge.

Police said his sex offense occurred in 1984. He was required to register as a sex offender after that but was not re-quired to register now.

Spokesman Sgt. Pat Ross said Tuesday the department was not releasing information on the incident because no crime was committed.

" is correct on this. and he wasnt required to regester as a sex offender because it wasnt required at the time he was convicted if you would read the article .it states just that. "

" Bingo! You have found the weakness in all the extremists arguments. Beat them, Ruin their entire lives. Confine them forever. Kill Them. In the end, you promote and encourage one idea - Do away with the one who can testify against you. Kill the victim. Destroy the evidence. Limit all other options and reap a whirlwind. All the hard-liners can write it off as just an unintended consequence. "

" He still has to register as a sex offender from the last crime, but since all he was doing was hurting himself, he doesn't have to register as a sex offender (because this time he didn't commit a crime to anyone) "

" Everyone is talking about the pain and horrible act he did with a knife. I'm wondering more of why he isn't required to register with a sex offender status anymore. "

" Many psych scientists have linked sexual predation not with sex, but with control issues. Removing of testicles would not stop the urge, nor the ability, to be a sexual predator. There have been studies performed on sexual predators who were chemically castrated, and the effects were shown that it did not impact the recidivism at any significant rate. Linking the testicles with the crime is just urban legend. "

TO: DAVE wrote on Oct 24, 2007 9:51 AM:

" Removing your testicles does not stop the ability to "perform" just stops the urge. This is why there are so many opponents to castration in lieu of jail time. And maybe this wasn't his best course of action but it's better than another molested or murdered child. I think this man should be commended on his actions. In this one act he has done more for society than most of us have. He THOUGHT OF OTHERS BEFORE HIMSELF. If only others would contemplating hurting themselves as opposed to others this country would be a better place. "

when will these... wrote on Oct 24, 2007 9:49 AM:

" guys get it. It is not the penis that has the urges....it comes from their mind. Even if they cut everything off, they would still have the desire b/c their mind tells them so. There are other ways of harming children than removing your groin. "

" Thats what I was wondering... I can't really see how this would stop his sex drive since that would be located in his brain. Now I may have missed this on Mr. Wizard but I don't think this drive would be related to testosterone. Even if it is wouldn't testosterone still flow even if he doesn't have two testicles? "

" maybe people think it curbs the thoughts but it doesnt .the thought is still there and some other kind of abuse will take the place of penatration . such as the death of the child . "

" The Pantagraph hasn't been posting most of what I say on here but I will try again. There's a longer story about this guy in the Springfield Journal Register on line In the 80's 20/20 did a story on a guy in Arkansas who was castrated by someone who thought he raped a woman. He told the interviewer that it didn't stop his sex drive and he was just as able to perform now as before. I wonder if that's true. Not that I want to find out by experience. lol But if it is true, why the need for it to happen? "

Stinko wrote on Oct 24, 2007 7:38 AM:

" You have to be one tough SOB to castrate yourself. I really have a lot of sympathy for this man. He may have thought he was doing the right thing. (and maybe he was) "

" passout from the pain. He sounds somewhat mentally sick. If he had the desire to harm a child I think there would be other ways or things he could do to curve the desire. Maybe he could be under a doctor's care with some kind of medication to help. But at least he tried something, you got to give him that. "
